    Hey guys,

    Just fried the notorious R/R.
I have a new one arriving tomorrow and wanted to know what is the stuff called that your supposed to put on the R/R during install.

cant seem to find the thread I saw it on..seems like its some sort of goop?

Also does anyone have the link or some sort of instructions on:
    Re locating/Re-wiring the R/R
Or bypassing that area of the harness ?
This is the second R/R in 6 months. I think its getting too hot or wiring is bad.

    Thanks-
    Steve

I would put dielectric grease on the plug after giving it a good cleaning with contact cleaner. This will keep moisture out and prevent corrosion.

Are you sure your R/R is the only problem? From the threads I have read, your Stator might be the problem. I saw where some guys said they fried a couple R/Rs before they figured out that their Stator was the real culprit. Have you done the Electrosport flow chart and checked all your readings? Good luck and I hope relocating works.

    Thanks-

I'll be posting this in another thread soon...
Just disconnected the R/R tonite and checked all the wiring!!!! Ouch!!!

I found the the plug/connection to the R/R was burt and completely FRIED!!!
...I guess this is the part of the wiring harness everyone keeps talking about that Honda skimped on...all wires are fried and brittle.

Is there another problem that caused this to happen?
Or should I proceed to try and bypass this area of the harness as a fix?

The goop is called Arctic Silver. Used for heat dissipation in computers.

I had that goop between the frame and my R/R, and it was the upgraded Honda finned OEM unit. Just makes a mess, IMHO, no real benefit.

R/R Died in 9 months. Burnt connector (#4?) was the culprit. I just re-wired the whole charging system (stator connector to R/R, replaced ground and 12v+)with 12 gauge wire, and replaced the R/R.

Ran OK this morning, I am going to re-test the system when I gat home and the bike is still hot.

Could you give me a step-by-step on what I need to do for the Harness bypass with my R/R?

Not really an electrician ya know. Would be helpful if someone could explain the steps involved for re-wiring the R/R directly.

    Thanks
    Steve

Hi VT Viffer; What type of RR unit did you use as your replacement? Are you going to try the 12v electric fan with your new unit.? I did the high finned Honda replacement RR and attached a 12v electric fan to my Y2K VFR, so far everything is working well, however I really dont have that much time or mileage to be flying the flag. eddie

Eddie, I just did a Honda R/R install. Even with the new unit, it was still only charging about 12.8 at idle, so after doing some research I ran two wires from the positive battery terminal straight to the R/R hot wires with a splice. I then ran two extra ground wires from the negative terminal to the factory frame ground.

I now have over 14v charging and no issues. The yellow wires are cool now.

The R/R that I purchased was not finned, it was some cheapo "bait n' switch" unit from regulatorrectifier.com. I hacked up a Pentium 3 heatsink and then attached it to el cheapo with zip ties and CPU heatsink goo. I wired the fan to the plate light pigtail (since I no longer use that particular light  ).

Fan comes on with the ignition, have not had issue with charging since.

But same as you, no flag flying yet.
