I fired my 86 up yesyterday after about 18 months and I had the seat off and I was very surprised with how hot the rec/reg was with about 5 mins of running, not super hot but hot enough to know it was working pretty hard. Charging volts checked out ok

Today I put a Pentium 4 cpu fan onto the RR, using professional style tie wraps. Temp wired it to ground and the live from the rear brake light switch so only on with ignition on.
Keeps temp down to low 40's Celsius. Cant find any bad connections or other charging faults. Maybe they just run this hot. Will now have to check the temp on the blackbird RR and see how hot that runs.

Dude, you are going waaaay overboard on this. R/R's fail every couple thousand miles. Just how it is. Not just Hondas. They run hot, all of them. With the exception of aftermarket MOSFET style which run cooler. They're taking in a 3 phase relatively high AC voltage. You're bike isn't exactly consuming all that juice and it doesn't just disappear. It gets turned to heat and excess dumped to ground. Make sure the connections are good and throw a spare in your tool kit and go ride.

I guess that any cooling has to help and can't hurt but I'm still using my Pentium 4 :smile-new:

Thanks for the comments and ideas guys.
In regard to cooling, I think if something with a passive heat sink gets really hot then some active cooling is the answer. The fan and cable ties were lying about on the shed anyway and took just a few minutes to cobble together. A 38 Celsius reduction in temperature is likely to help the reg live longer.
In computers that is certainly the case

I got the CBR1100 out today and went for a 160km ride to relax. When I got back I shut it off and about 2 or 3 minutes later I checked the Reg/Rect temp and it was 72 celcius - never had any probs with that bike so maybe it is normal to see 70-80 C after an hour of riding.
My low 40's on the cooled VFR now looks pretty good and possibly even normal. I might trust it enough to take it for a longer ride in the country (owned it for two months and only managed to do 200km so far).

Four years down the track and my P4 CPU fan is still doing sterling duty keeping the RR cool. RR is still alive as well. All bonus.
