I've owned three bikes and riden probably a dozen others but this bike ('07) has the heaviest exhaust smell of them all. This includes a couple Harleys. Is this just because of where the pipes are located? Have an other experienced riders noticed this?

I agree, they smell different. These little motors run HOT. The exaust gases are cleaner than any HD. Perhaps heavy equates to more complete combustion? Or, if yours is under the 500 mile mark, you may still be burning the oil residue out of the pipes.
If you see smoke, or start using oil, then worry.
I've been on two wheels for 26 years, and the VFR is the most fun bike I have ever owned. I trust that it will be the most reliable too, cause you can't get to any thing to work on it.

I havn't noticed a big difference from other bikes I've owned. If this is your first with the exhaust under the seat it is possible you are getting some in the airflow. The 1000rr has been known for a lot of exhaust gas swirling back into the "cockpit". People say they smell like exhaust after riding. Most Ducati models and many other Japanese bikes have the exhaust under the seat like that and now there is a switch to under the bike including the new 1000rr. I think thats more inspired by the new 800cc MotoGP style and keeping weight low on the bike than anything.

Mine stinks, too. More than the dinky dirt bikes sitting in the garage.

I think it's a combination of what Mac and Alter Ego said. I'm still in my break-in period so it's probably burning out impurities. That along with the swirl back up into the "cockpit" would account for it. I just wanted to hear from some other people to ensure it was fairly normal. Thanks guys.

Maybe it's not just the newer bikes. I had recently started my '98 in the garage and let it run for about 10 seconds. I had the garage doors closed because it was about 9:30 at night and I didn't want angry neighbors. Very quickly the garage filled with what seemed like poisonous gas and my eyes and my nostrils were burning from the fumes! It was aweful! I could have put my face in right at the end of my car's tail pipe and that probably would have seemed to be a nice warm breeze in the country air compared to the VFR exhaust. Yes, it was that bad. I never realized that it smelled so bad. Of course, I don't have a catalytic converter either. Maybe that has a lot to do with it?
