I recently purchased a cheap project VFR750 which previous owner had started to strip down.. The seller told me that it was in running condition before he got the (stupid) idea to take the engine and so on to his ATV. At least the engine turns but its missing the CDI unit, so cant obviously start.
Before anything else I want to make sure that she actually runs, so I need a new CDI for it. It seems that there is a few different types of CDIs on ebay that are sold as 86 DCI. 87-89 units are easy to spot, but there is still two or three different types.
I almost bought a Denso unit marked as 131800-0020, but I just want to be sure. I did check the wire harness and it has only 2 red connectors at the rear end and the unit has 3. Most likely the missing connector has just been changed for some reason.. Havent actually checked that engine is a 86 model, so thats probably something I need to still check.
But if someone can verify that Denso 131800-0020 is the right (and only?) unit for the 86 engine, would be much appreciated.

what's your engine serial number? the parts fiche I'm using doesn't specifically list the '86 as being sold in Finland until 1987 but the serial number will help narrow things down.

as for the part number, it doesn't come up but the Denso spark unit (30400-ML7-601) was used for '86 only and looks like they switched to various OKI units for 87-89 (30410-ML7-661 for '87, 30410-ML7-921, 30410-ML7-880 and 30410-ML7-922 for '88 and finally 30410-ML7-881 for '89)

hope that helps somewhat, let us know!

She is stored at different location, so cant check the engine number at the moment. I dont actually even know which model she is, most likely imported from Germany. I did some quick research and it seemed that all of the 86 models were with that same part number.
The problem is that Denso has their own code on these, which obviously isnt the same as Hondas.. So yep, the oem code would help if I was buying a new unit, but the prices on them is rather ridiculous :D
I did google that Hondas part number and ebay listings (or similar) is pretty much all you get.. Seems to be really hard to guess the correct part number for these. At the moment it actually seems that all listings with that Honda number are all the same Denso units. A few weeks back it seemed that all generations had the same part number according to ebay listings..
Might just order one those and hope for the best.

if your '86 is like mine the cdi has 3 plugs and one snap connection. check to see if there is a wire coming out of the rear of the front head; if so, it's an '86 engine. a 2 plug cdi is from an '87.

doubtful the engine will run if the carbs have gummed up, and i'd suggest you run a compression test b4 doing any more work.

(hey the new Finnish Pm is HOT !)

Got the cheapest CDI-unit (3plugs+1 connector) that was listed on ebay.. And she is alive.. And very loud.. Has a 4 to 1 exhaust with "muffler" and the thing is louder than my 91 without the silencer :)
Requires some basic maintenance, but seems to be running on all 4 cylinders. Needs at least new petcock seals, new contacts for fuel pump and carb clean.. New starter solenoid aswell, due pretty intense first start attempt. Have to say, not the nicest feeling and wouldt want to go through the same thing with fairings on.. Heard that the fuel pump didnt make any sound so released the start button, but the starter relay didnt. I had the ignition key on the garage floor next to me and the startermotor was still running, when I discovered that finger tighten battery terminal bolts were not finger loose and had to run to search for any tool that would help :D
The startermotor survived and she seems to be in somewhat decent condition, so not bad at all.
