Can someone tell me what the speedo drive hub that connects to the bolt head that holds the countershaft sprocket on and runs the speedo drive. Is it steel or aluminum? I really didn't want to remove all that stuff to find out. Figured someone here would know.

I didn't even think of plastic or to mention what gen I had. Mines a 3rd gen and I just kind of figured it was made of steel and I saw some made of aluminum which would be lighter.

S-Man nailed it, they are plastic. That part is used on almost 700 different Honda models.

I'd think plastic was safest... I've seen many cables rusted/seized just a few inches up... regular cable lube would let it turn easy and might keep the plastic from wearing out.

I had found and purchased an aluminum one but it didn't do any better than the plastic one IMO. I went back to the OEM plastic ones as they are cheaper and readily available.
