TLDR: Does anyone have a 1986 VF500F carb boot they can measure the ID, OD and length of?
Hey guys I need some help. I'm working on a 1986 VF500F and I've got to rebuild the carbs. I need new carb boots to do the job properly, problem is the carb boots are NOLA from Honda and the one aftermarket supplier I can find wants $100 for a set of 4. I'm a cheapskate and won't shell out for that. I plan on using either "universal" carb boots or buy a length of high temp silicone or rubber and make some boots. The boots are on the bike so I can't get my calipers on them to measure and I don't want to have the bike apart for long (that's how you lose parts, ask how I know) and I'd like to have everything I need before I begin. Does anyone has one loose on the shelf that they could measure for me? I'd really appreciate any help you guys might have for me. Thanks!

The 1000 are 42mm ID, I got some 38mm off AliExpress for $10, too tight for the 1000 but may well fit the 500

If you do get a size have a look on AliExpress

Uh, yeah, I started there, that's where I found the set of 4 for $100. And also a single OEM for $50........ There is a reason I'm planning to use radiator hose to put them back on. I'm highly skilled at searching out parts and these just aren't out there for a reasonable price. And what I mean by reasonable is fairly priced with comparable items. Those 4 boots on ebay for $100 come from a seller who sells carbs boots for a cb750 (same style of insulator) for $17 for the set. But I'd bet that he ordered a whole lot more CB750 boots than he did VF500 boots. Oh well, at least this problem has a simple enough solution.

are your boots cracked or just hard ?

if theyre just hard you can soften them up again by soaking them in a cocktail of wintergreen oil and alcohol for a day or two. 1/3 Wintergreen Oil 2/3 alcohol. It will soften them almost back to new, they will not swell up either. mix the wintergreen & alcohol in a jar (like a pickle jar) , drop the boots in and put the lid on for a few days.

Oil of wintergreen can be had at your local drug-store or pharmacy

Measure the O.D. of your carb body throat and make your own.
