came across a 16000 mile vfr 750, i was just wondering how the 1986 bike compared to later 750s for things like power, comfort, handling etc.

    are '86s worth getting?

    thx

In my opinion, except for lack of parts and dated suspension, the '86 is the bike to get. It's the first 'Ceptor with the aluminum frame, gear driven cams and posts good HP.

    Engine:
    748cc, 70x48.6mm bore x stroke, compression ratio 10.5:1
    carburetion: four Keihin 34mm CV

    Chassis:
    wheelbase 1480mm
    rake/trail 27.6 degrees/108 mm
suspension travel 140 mm front, 110 mm rear
air assisted fork with TRAC anti-dive
    tires 110/90V16 front, 130/80V18 rear
wet weight (observed) 505 lb with full tank
    dry weight (claimed) 436.5 lb

    Performance:
    (claimed)
horsepower 104 claimed (at the crank)
    torque 76.5 N-m (56.4 lb-ft) @ 8500 RPM claimed
fuel capacity 20L including 4L reserve

    (observed)
fuel consumption 6.6L/100km (42.7 mpg imperial)
quarter mile 11.32 seconds at 122.11 mph; top speed 149 mph.
measured rear-wheel horsepower 87 hp at 11,000 rpm
    torque peak at 8500 rpm.

Comfort and handling is all subjective. In 1986, it was on the bleeding edge of motorcycle technology.

It is definitely worth getting and can still hang with the newer bikes in the twisties. It is a solid and reliable machine. I'm keeping mine forever.

the bike, i was told, has a bit of a buzz (wobble?) since the guy changed the rear tire, would this be due to going to a larger width? or out of balance? otherwise the bike sounds good.

found a second one, but the seat has been replaced (its black), has about 25000 more kms though, but doesn't need new tires. same price. decisions decisions

I've got an 86 750 (RWB) that I'm the 3rd owner of. It's got 45K miles on it and still runs really fast and strong. The Regulator/Rectifier is known to give all of us grief, but good aftermarket units have taken care of that. I have no problem keeping up and passing the local squids on todays 600's in the twisties. It is definately fast enough to get you thrown in jail. It's not a wheelie or stoppy machine if that's what your into. I have no problem taking week long trips on mine. In fact my last trip was 4 days and 1,400 miles. It burned/used about 3 oz, of oil. I plan on going from Washington state to Laguna Seca next summer for the MotoGP and will not think twice about it. The tire selection is not as great as todays bikes, I run Perilli's on mine.

P.S. the 4 bikes on craigslist are located in Port Angles, Washington. Fred just posts them all over the map on craigslist.

well, i finally got some pics today, i have to admit the first one i found looks a little better, but the guy has done some rigging on the bike which kinda makes me nervous, replacing the thermostat with a switch, and apparently the bike has a bit of a vibration. needs new back tire im told. the second bike, looks pretty good, but the seat cover has a crack, and it seems the rear plastic piece looks like it has a slight one too. the second one is pretty much original while the first has a hindle exhaust, sounded pretty mean over the phone. the one thing i would like to find for the second one is a blue seat however, it has been redone and is black, are blue seats hard to find?

one other thing, i saw a picture of a '93 in white, i thought that was a pretty good looking bike too!

tried to get a pic on here, didn't work! would have liked to have gotten some opinions on that second one, i'm leaning towards it even though it has about 20 000 more kms than the other. seems like its had less home rigging done to it
