1986 VFR750F Restoration

    Well, I threw the bike on the lift the other day and started the teardown. I try to be as organized as I can and have seen others do the same so this project will be no different. Going through what comes off the bike, I've been referencing everything against the parts catalog and making a list as I go - it worked out well that way for the VF so I'm doing the same with the VFR.

    Pulled the plastics off, they're all in quite good condition overall as is the paint on the tank so for NOW, no plans to refinish any of those parts other than the "Honda" decal missing from the aftermarket windscreen (which I'll keep)

    Headlight needs a new bulb but otherwise is complete. Fuel tank needs all the mounting rubbers replaced as they're torn or just plain work out plus a couple of o-rings for the sensor unit and the petcock. Under the seat, the mounts for the fuel pump and the fuel cut relay were gone so they need to be ordered, proper hardware throughout is planned as well as new filters, fuel lines and a new battery which never came with the bike in the first place.

    For the airbox, everything was there but I recall a discussion regarding keeping the duct or ditching it? Thoughts?

    Anyways, pictures. That's all for now. Going to clean things up and keep going with the rest of the teardown.

    It looks like you are starting with a very good specimen. I restored the same bike back in 2002 and took my time finding one that was already in decent shape. It save a lot of time and money. Looking forward to seeing the progress.

    Had an hour last night so I pulled the rear signals off to check them out, good shape overall but the fronts were ugly aftermarket ones so hopefully in my box of VF spares I can cobble together a set of fronts.

    Pulled the speedo and the tach off to give them a once over today then pulled the fuse panel and the fairing mount off. Overall, not in terrible shape just going to clean and repaint everything for the most part.

    Hi AJB,
    I'm in Kingston.
    When the snow flies I'm rebuilding my old 86 VFR streetbike that has been sitting for a number of years.
    Then next on the list is an 86 I purchased as a project to get modified so it will be shedding a number of stock parts.

    1st on the list is to get the shop cleared out of all the summer stuff.

    in remarkably fine condition for 60k km, great find. get a thin blade in there and straighten out the oil cooler fins. so unbelievably rare to see one with no damage to clutch or alternator covers !!!!

    Been a little bit since the last update, bike is completely apart with the engine on the rack to inspect/clean/adjust as necessary.

    Had some trouble getting the 4-1 off so had to get creative :)

    That's it for now, plan is to clean the engine, throw some paint on the case, refinish the covers, gaskets/seals all around but this is as far down as the engine is gonna go unless I find something scary between now and then...

    dija get around to testing the compression ? i know you're having fun, but it looks like you are doing a hellofalot of unnecessary work, pulling the engine for example.

    got ocd ?

    haha never have I ever been referred to as "smart"

    definately OCD however, comps we're good, pretty solid between 170/180 cold which is great, valves all measured right where they need to be as well but I'm really just cleaning 34 years as crap from the engine and the bike and replacing the small bits that are toast......

    but yes, it's fun (so far) and keeps me sane/out of wifey's hair for the winter

    Looks very nice. Following this, maybe I can learn something for my own VFR 1986 with 75k KM's ont it, which I got this summer (first bike).
