Can Anyone provide a detailed description of the R/R bypass that was discussed?

found my Wiring Harness and plug for the R/R brittle and FRIED tonite.
I need a replacement Plug & R/R. Might as well Bypass the harness while I'm in there too, seems the Honda wires in this area leave a lot to be desired.

Just need a step by step on how 2 do the bypass.

Is there anything else that would cause the plug to fry that I should be concerned about?

    Thanks-
    Steve

I cut it off back to where the wiring was good and added a used 5 wire GSXR unit with individual male/female connectors. That was 3 years ago.

3 black gixxer to 3 yellow honda
    black/white gixxer to green honda
    black/red gixxer to red honda

gixxer unit is MUCH larger with large fins so I could only used one stock bolt hole to mount it. The r/r problem got so bad that honda eventually began to sell the connector separately. I don't know if they still do.

    R/R and connector

You can't buy the connector separately through Honda but it can be had through Dennis Kirk.

    Thanks Guys-

This is a partial fix for now...still would like to completely bypass that area of the harness all together!

FotoMoto, Does the Stock Harness plug work directly with the GSXR unit you spoke about?

What is the exact model? GSXR 600, 750??? of the R/R unit I need?
So if I understand you right its a direct plug and play application?
That is, after I re-wire the new plug back on.

    Thanks

Yes it was an OEM suzuki gsxr unit. The 600/750/1000's all appear to be the same going by the looks of 'em. Mine came off an 03 750. The newer units now have 7 wires.

Just like the elctrosport, the stock r/r on the left looks like a toy in comparison.

No you can't use the stock connectors (burned out honda on left, gixxer on right), they are very close but no cigar. grrrrr.

    Thanks!
I already found a few on ebaylike the ones your talking about.

Only problem is, if I cant use the stock plastic Junction/Connection box on the VFR's for this Suzuki unit....

Than how do I connect my VFR harness wires to the GSXR Unit?
Just a straight up splice job using wire connectors without the VFR box?

If you look at my photos closely, you'll notice that the honda has 3 top connections while the suzuki has 3 on the bottom. Even if you could remove and switch them to match, the connectors are about the same size. The suzuki male needs to be smaller to slide into the honda female. (no lame jokes please LOL)

My honda connector was burnt up so it was a no brainer to cut it off and add the individual connections. After the pics, I wrapped them up in electrical tape for more protection from the elements.

    Again, Thanks!

I also had the Honda connection box burn up on me...FRIED!!!
So I will give the splice job a wirl when the Suzuki unit comes in the mail.

Any thoughts on relocation of the Suzuki unit? for better air flow

    Hi all

Just logged on for the first time here, so haven't uploaded pics yet. If it helps, I did a thread on replacing the r/r on the 94-97 series and rewiring the charging system over on the UK VFR forum at:
    http://www.bikersoracle.com/vfr/forum/showthread.php?t=52188

Thee unit I've been using is from an R1 - made by Mitsui Corp it seems to be almost bulletproof and has been on my bike for a couple of years now with no problems

Just wanted to give an update, in case anyone still looks at this thread.

FInished the bike tonite...BIG thanks to FotoMoto (Doug) for all his help!

I went with the GSXR unit instead of playing around with the expensive over-rated aftermarket junk they call R/R's.

I've had bad experiences with the Electrosport models. And the honda upgrade isnt much better. This Suzuki unit is HUGE!!!

    1. Cut open the harness
    2. installed new 12ga wires
    3. ran it exactly as stock to the Gsxr unit
    4. closed everything back up...heat shrink & tape
    5. remounted new Suzuki R/R
    6. Charges at 14.9v with no additional mods.

Since threads like this one helped me, I thought I would give back.

I just installed a 2007 Yamaha R1 r/r on my 1998 VFR. I cut the Honda wires at the r/r and crimped then soldered the crimp connections with 1/4 spade connectors that slid onto the Yamaha unit. I did that by heating the wire and connector with the soldering gun and sweated the solder into the joint. I used good shrink tubing and after assembly, taped it up real well with black electrical tape. I need to drill two holes in the Honda to mount and it takes up almost the exact same space in the factory location.

The multimeter showed the regulator keeps the battery at a very consistent 14.4V.

If you are using an R1 regulator, make sure the three connector get all 3 yellow wires (any order) from the Honda and the 2 connector gets the 2 red (positive) at the inside connector and the 2 green (negative) wires go to the outside connector.
