If the battery stays at 14.36 volts at idle, it is being charged, but not very fast. That should be OK, so I would not suspect the charging system. However, if you rarely ride the bike and then ride for only short distances, I can see how you could have a problem. I'd suggest keeping it connected to a battery tender when not in use. Keeping the battery fully charged at all times will extend its life. You may want to get a weather proof Powerlet socket to make it convenient to connect the charger. That, together with matching plugs, will also make it more convenient to check the battery voltage, connect an electrically heated vest for cold weather riding, or charge a cell phone.

It makes absolutely no difference to the battery whether you park on concrete, wood, asphalt, brick, tile, or moon rocks.

Man I don't hit the forums for a few days and look what I miss!

Yeah the lights on for more than 5 minutes is a very bad thing for a VFR.. Dual lowbeams suck the battery dry...

However, if you have a Batteries Plus Store near ya or you can go to a dealer or moto-shop and have them stress test the battery.. Most places around me will do it for free.

Two weeks ago I was waiting on a friend and left the key on for probably 8-10 minutes - same thing - click! First time the battery has discharged in over 13k miles. Haven't had a problem since.

After researching "tender" type battery chargers I came across these: http://www.ctek.com/EN-US/Buy-US-Charger.aspx You can get them through Pipe City for a very reasonable price. These seem to be the latest (6th?) generation of maintenance chargers. Hope this helps someone.

    hmmm. thanks bud .
I bought a king kong sized Charger , compared to the one your advert displays ... !!
End result is still the same : my Battery problems , along with some mythical "do not park on concrete " advice , have all but disappeared as soon as they came along .
I do not doubt though , that showing off my New Vince pipes for 4 days , along with a poor excuse that moring for a ride - caused the Battery to just go backwards from there .
Whatever , I wil not know what caused my Low battery situation .
a Treacle charger is something of a neccessity , in my view , if one is Not going to be riding fr longer periods of time .

    Thanks guys .

This would be an interesting thread/addition to the Wiki!
My '96 has the UK spec lightswitch (off/park/on) on the right handgrip and it's brilliant! I'm picking up my '07 tomorrow morning (Woohoo!!) but would like to be able to switch the lights off on this model.

If you can take a few piccies while you are doing your wiring job please?

A general comment on batteries. If the a bike sits for any length of time, even a couple of weeks, without running there is a significant drop in the battery charge especially if left in the bike, which is actually using electricity all the time. Lead acid batteries like to be at or close to full charge all the time. Their performance breaks down quite quickly if the charge drops. If you ride every week you should be fine but if it sat in the bike shop for three months without running that can be enough to damage the battery.

From what I have heard RR problems on a Gen 6 are relatively rare so chances are that it is the battery.

3 minutes . 3 mintutes is all it took to switch bikes so I could mount my friends 'Blade , was all it took for the Viffers Battery to go flat again , with the bike standing , and not at idle .
