Good afternoon, VFR world - I'm still around, just been quiet on the internet.
Since it has been a few years since I had tires, I put some fresh Michelin Pilot power 2CT's onto the bike. WHile the wheels were off, I finally got around to addressing the hideous finish that plagued these 20 year old, 56,000 mile wheels - The finish was pitted and dull; and wouldn't clean up anymore. I had some cans of Krylon laying around so I sprayed them with three coats of gloss black. Then, once they had a few days to cure, I masked them off and added a gold stripe on the perimeter of the wheel to break up the black. I chose gold because the front discs already had a gold center. I was a bit nervous until finally mounting them, because once painted, I kept getting the impression of a wheel for the black & gold 1989 Yamaha FJ1200. But nonetheless, I think I kind of like the look on the VFR. It certainly beats crappy, pitted black and grey!

In the same boat, should really paint mine... how'd you prep, and interested how they stood up to the tire mounting afterwards.

Ray, wet sand, clean and shoot. The original finish will let the paint "bite" and stick if properly roughed. And if you accidentally mar anything up on mounting, mask the tite and do a final sweet coat. Literally have done it dozens of tmes. If prepped right, it is very durable.

Agree with above. Those wheels, the whole bike for that matter, looks really swell. Indeed, you did a fine job on those.

Thanks, always glad to hear the voice of experience...... I was kinda interested in how good the Krylon was. I agree with all that, 'twas my intention... I'll do it with tars off. I'm thinkin I'll keep some spare paint in case a refresh is needed. I'm leaning towards Rustoleum and something other than the original black..

Thinking of painting mine as well. A buddy recommended Bulldog Adhesion Promoter. It is a little pricey. You will probably spend less on the paint, but he said it really helps. There are wheel specific spray paints I'm just not sure which one I will get. I want a silver/aluminum finish to match the frame on my 5th gen.
