The same thing happened to my '99 VFR800, too. First the battery died, had to jump start couple times. Unsufficient charging. Replaced the battery and the R/R. Everything seemed OK, when one day the guages stopped working, couple sec later the head light was gone, couple more sec. then the whole bike died. The battery was cooked. Now I replaced it, but the 20 amp fuel pump's fuse pops every time when I turn it on. The bike is down, found the break rear lights, signals are gone, too.

This is the first forum where I can read about this problem with the exact same symptoms. There are a lot of website about the R/R, how to cool it down, etc. but not much about the damage that can be caused by the overcharging replacemant R/R. So the damage to the ECM is permanent, no way to fix it? I wonder why HONDA did not protect the ECM by a fuse in case of the extra load on the electric network?

has anyone ever thought of a " class action lawsuit" against Honda for the lousy R/R and electrical system design? I have only had to change one R/R in my life and that was on a 1983 vf750f ..

I read many posts on different VFR sites about failed R/R causing burnt wiring or frying batteries Etc... If you ask me it should be considered a safety issue.

Does this problem carry over to the 6th Gen? I have an 03 (AUG 07 purchase). The bike came with an extended warrantee, I am guessing this would fall under it. You guys have a legitimate beef with Honda, it is a serious safety issue. This site is a great resource, I appreciate the time people take to post these issues. Good Day!!

I totally agree that this is a safety issue. My bike died in the middle of a heavy traffic highway @ 8 pm. It was dark, since my lights went off it was very risky to pull over. i guess it wold be nice to see the statistics, most cases it is undercharging, so you can not start the engine or it breaks down at the light. Yet overcharging will kill your battery and fries your elect system any time when you drive. If it happens on GW or any other big, busy
bridges you are in trouble and danger.

    20 amp fuse pops

Just went checked the ECM, if I disconnect the gray plug from ECM then the fuse is fine. of course, the bike does not start.

if connect the gray plug, but pull the green wire from it, fuse is fine again.

It looks I need to replace the ECM, too.
can not afford a new one (~$600)
just ordered a used one from cycletherapy.com ($300)
Not many people know about the overcharging problem.
