Welcome Scottie. Wife and I had a tour of GB a few years ago and spent some time in Scotland. Had to get back to my roots. Iverness as a matter of fact was one of our over night locations. There is such a lot of great history in Scotland and the architecture is simply grand.

Welcome Nessie! I was visiting Scotland a number of years ago, wishing I was able to ride it instead of driving it. Hoping to get back soon.

Thanks for the warm welcome much appreciated. My brother sadly no longer with us worked for The Hudson Bay Co for many years and stayed in Baffin Island. He actually married an Eskimo/inuit not sure of the right term and don’t mean to offend if I’ve got it wrong. Inverness is a nice place to live though like anyplace can have its problems. Big bonus though is the roads all round us are great for biking as I imagine Canada would be

Baffin Island1 Who did he piss off? Yes. I the political correct world the proper term is Inuit. Then again, I just called you Scottie. LOL. Life for the locals up that way is extremely hard. A very good friend of mine was posted up in Frobisher Bay. He tells me of some of the hardships the Inuit face up there as a mater of routine. Progress has not treated them very well I am afraid.

Both the east side and the far west side of Canada has some fine riding but there are about a thousand miles in between, we call the Prairies, that is as flat as pee on a plate with the foam blowed off, and the road system looks like graph paper. Kind of boring. You can watch your kids run away from home for three days before you need to call in the searchers.

I really liked Scotland and would like to get back there some day before I leave this earth.

It really changed his life working up there and sadly not in a good way. I think with all the dark winters etc there were lots of problems with drink and alcoholism and also recreational drugs. He ended up with real alcohol problems and changed a lot. He eventually came back to Inverness but the damage was done by then and both him and his wife were very reliant on alcohol. Throat cancer eventually took him but he was pretty knackered after living there. He also worked in Arctic bay which I think is different to Baffin Island. Hey ho thats life I guess. Canada sounds a great place to go to and many people I know have family there and give glowing reports about it. Sorry times today though with the mass shooting that has happened.
Take Care and Stay safe everyone

Yes. It is very isolated and harsh up there and substance abuse is everywhere. Not only alcohol, but huffing gasoline is a real problem with the Inuit youth. Like glue, huffing, that stuff just destroys the brain.

Something to remember about the 24 hours of darkness, that is in the winter. In the summer, it is 24 hours of daylight for couple weeks or so. I would imagine there is really not much to do up there for recreation. Never been there but would have liked to have serve a stint up there before I retired. But I didn't dare ask for it because I would have ended up divorced if my wife ever learned I asked to go up there to a limited duration posting.
