    I have a VFR 800 FI 2005.

The starting problem is not firing and making a terrible clunking noise when it’s turning over sometimes, particularly when it’s cold.
Someone suggested a battery CCA problem, others starter motor engage gear damage. While I haven’t stripped starter motor yet, additional battery power doesn’t seem to help.

Also on a too regular basis, sitting at traffic lights idling, the engine will simply cut out. And won’t immediately fire when trying to start.
I was thinking this may be either a faulty electrical connection or faulty sensor or relay. But, I don’t know where to start looking.

    Anyone’s help would be appreciated.

Other than the mechanical issues, it’s a real joys ride.

clanking noise is most likely the starter clutch misbehaving, and you'll need to remove right side engine cover to get to it. it's not the starter itself.

be sure to read the service manual b4 you start work.

Thanks very much for the heads up. Looks like it’s onto the hoist again.

if you can lean the bike a few degrees to the left you won't need to drain the oil.

. Thanks. I’ve pulled the starter motor out and check the operation of the clutch mechanism. And the clutch is operating okay. I found the brushes are worn out and insulating box inside the starter motor was broken in bits. These bits floating in the starter motor may have been what was causing the turning over to stop with a clunk. once I’ve reassembled the starter motor and put it back in the bike. I can check that everything is operating correctly and let you know.
