I tried using chain lube and it wasn't a good choice, smooth but the throttle felt a little sticky afterwards. Many lube makers make a specific cable lube however, and there are cheap gadgets that fit the end of the cable and direct the lube along its length.
I lube my cables on all my bikes. I have a custom rubber cylinder that clamps around the cable, then it's squeezed to force lube down the cable. But a commercial cable luber as pictured would work with a air powered lube canister. One of the best lubes for cables is cartridge fork oil for dirt bikes. It has several additives, including copper, that make it very slippery, and it is also very light viscosity. To me, its noticeable after lubing. I lube the cables when I have a reason to pull the throttle apart.
