Fuel economy - tankfull

    Hi all, I'm a proud new owner of a silver 98. I dont understand l/100km and being a brit why do you americans have different gallons lol.
    Instead, can we share what mileage to expect per tank? Is 250 possible?

    If you are talking kilometers, probably. In miles, probably not unless you are running on fumes and they are all highway miles.

    The Fi has a 20L tank and on mine I would get between 16 and 18km/L depending on the fun level. So 320km/200 miles is possible but I was usually refuelling at 280km/175 miles.

    Haven't run the tank dry, so I can't say for sure. But remember that there will always be a bit of fuel left in the tank, that the pump can't get.
    I get 21-21.5 km/l and usually refuel at around 320-330km, with 2 bars still showing on the gauge.
    In theory that should mean that I could comfortably get about 400km/250 miles on a tank, but in reality, it would probably be a little bit less due to the fuel left in the tank.

    I don't commute, and even my touring with my mates seems to be heavy handed.
    I've ran out at 390km, and gauged flashed for 50km.
    I normally let the gauge flash for about 20km, as long as I know where the next servo is.
    I mostly get around 320km if I ring it's neck, with about 1 to 0.5L left in tank when I refill.
    On trips I refill around 280~300km.
    Around here once you're out of the main cities and off the major Hwy's, most service stations or towns are around 100km apart, so sometimes you have to get it when you can.

    I seem to fill up every 150 miles or so, the gauge is flashing but there is usually 5 or so litres left in the tank even when it's been flashing empty for a while.

    Thanks for the replies guys, i guess i should plan for fuel stops around the 175 mile mark, not bad for a gorgeous sporty beast!

    Hi guys, just thought i'd put my 2 pence in..
    So far, I've been commuting to work, and I've got 185 miles out of a tank full.
    Hope this helps someone.

    comparisons may be affected by the 10% of ethanol added to US fuel.

    It's far too far for me to go to get US fuel, so I just use the local stuff. Did just over 200 miles yesterday on a tank and a smidgin, including some occasional spirited riding (I never went over 110mph, though).

    I usually do around 320-340km between fill ups. 20 to 30 km of those are made with the light flashing and when I fill up the tank I can put around 18,5L so I guess I still have more a less 3L to spend but I'm afraid to test it... :p

    You are better not to run the tank too low anyway, the fuel pump is bathed in petrol.

    And (to finish the thought) the pump is cooled by the fuel. If it runs low on fuel often enough the pump life may be shortened.

    Yes that was my point, I thought it was self evident, I think it's good to know the bikes limit if you are ever in a situation were you start running low on fuel and there's a ways to go to a filling station, I fill every 150- 160 miles, in western Europe you are never that far from a fuel stop anyway but I would always fill up heading into unknown territory.

    Yep that's the reason I started this thread. As a new owner I wanted to know what she's really capable of, not because that's how I intend to drive, but to know in the unfortunate event that I was struggling, how far I've got. Don't think anybody has had more than 200. Can't talk mpg because of the US not only being imperial but having weird gallons! And don't even ask my to understand l/100km that's why we need brexit lol

    I can't understand the L/100km thing either, I've got my head around the km road signs and speed limits, but I still convert them back to mph in my head,
    the younger generation have gone fully metric here now, they know nothing except euros and km's, eventually the mpg km/100L thing will disappear as we all go fully electric, I suspect myself and my 5th gen will have disappeared from this mortal toil by then though:wheelie:

    200 miles plus on a tank is very do-able provided you ride smoothly without harsh acceleration or braking, and your tyres are properly inflated, and the bike is properly serviced. Basically you just need to be riding at fairly constant speed on a free flowing motorway (long distance cruise mode) from the outset. Starting with a full tank I have on several occasions covered the 600 miles from West London back home to a ski resort in the Alps with just two fuel stops. On the 2006+ 6th Gens you can cruise at 80mph in 6th gear and by using a Vesta throttle lock I can keep the RPM just below the Vtec engagement level, which really helps to keep fuel consumption down. Each time you stray into the vtec range, your fuel consumption will increase significantly.

    Yes you are probably right,the 5th gen will likely still be going after I have stopped:(
