Having problem with a front wheel bearing

I had a wheel bearing catastrophically fail the other day while riding. I remove the front wheel and the left bearing just all fell apart leaving only the outer race in the wheel. I have nothing to bang on to remove it. Suggestions?

 

I'm not sure if this is the right way but I took a Dremel with a cutting wheel and cut into the race twice and pried it out. In my impatience I managed to score the hub a little I hope that doesn't make much of a difference.

 

That’s as good a way as any without a puller

The cut won’t make any difference to the fit, you can always use a bit of Loctite for peace of mind

When you get the new bearings ask for double lip sealed

 

Thanks for the tip on the type of bearings but I had already ordered from a Canadian outfit online. I don't know what they are except they were inexpensive. All Balls brand...

I had helped a fellow member with his rear wheel on his Buell. Similar to your situation, the bearing disintegrated while we were on a ride! We had a tough time with removal but ultimately had to do the Drexel route. There was a slight Nick in the bearing race but it didn’t impact the new bearing.

If I’m not mistaken, All Balls have double sided sealed bearings.

 

i'd generally AVOID 'allballs' because they supply cheap chinese garbage and are too unreliable for use as wheel bearings. for your safety use only bearings made in usa, japan, germany, sweden or switzerland.

inexpensive bearings are ok in some places but never in wheels !

 

I will consider changing them again prior to the start of next riding season.

How many km's "should" a wheel bearing last?

 

usually need replacement by25- 35k miles.

 

My machine has a boat 15,000 miles on it.

 

maybe u had a seal failure that let water in ? you never used a pressure washer on the bike ?

 

I just bought it. Based on how clean it was I can imagine the prior owner using a power washer!

 

I have not replaced any of my wheel bearings on any of my street bikes eva, I don't ride through creek crossings or use power washers either. I did do my YSR50 a while back, I have a blind bearing puller from Tusk, it comes in a red blow molded case and has a range of collets along with a slide hammer (best part of the job.) Anyway, we dodged a Cat5 hurricane so FTW. Hi ice-hunchin :wave:

 

i just had a front wheel bearing failure on my Yamaha Radian beater bike @ 22,000 miles. it was making noise, and then the speedo drive quit.

 

WOW! What a blast from the past, I remember the old Radian back when I had my Kawasaki ZL600, what a pita. Remember the Fazer had some funky gold accents, matter of fact all their bikes wore some gold, guess that was the style back then.

 

This is good to see. I'm planning some wheel "paint", so will get new bearings for the process.

 

Had a bearing fail once and the balls escaped. What I did was to gather them up and screwed in a self tapper the correct width to take up the
space between the bearings and was able to drift out as per normal.

Hopefully the screenshot attached. I just want to make sure. Buying oem. Does honda pack both bearings in one box? Thus why bikebandit says you only need 1 per assembly?

 

I knew the bearing was away. It was while I was in the process of replacing the shot bearings

 

Yes they come in pairs

 

@ $11 each, i doubt you are buying quality bits made in japan or someplace with high standards. Honda OEM replacement parts come in familiar honda packaging, the best way to see you have the genuine stuff.

one sign that the bikebandit parts aRE not OEM is that they sell an oil seal for the bearings while honda OEM comes with oil seals alreAdy in place.
