Hello VFRworld! (I'm new here)

Hello VFRworld, I’ve owned my 1983 vf750f red/white interceptor beauty since 1992. I am the 3rd owner. 1st guy used it a bit, went away to school, let it sit for years. 2nd guy got it took care of carbs etc, then started a family and didn't use it. I got it when I was in University, it had 12000 kms on when I got it and it’s got 25000 kms now. I did most of my riding in the first few years when I got it. Then I got married in 1997, we had 5 boys and during that time since 1997, I've probably put on less than 1602 kms (1000 miles). It’s near mint, all stock except for the add on luggage rack that sits over the tail fin. I’ve redone the fork seals. Coated the interior of the tank. Their was gas leaking from the carb seals about 5 years ago. I ignored it for too long and the fuel then tarnished/pitted the finish on the alternator and crankcase covers. I ordered a carb rebuild kit 3 years ago as well as got a new battery. I never got to doing it myself, just too busy and didn't make it a priority. I charged the battery off and on for 3 years. I had it equalized to try to save the cca for the rest of this season. I finally took off the carbs and brought them in to be rebuilt (needed cleaning and one new diaphram) and synced. I've done routine maintenance, oil/filter changes, plugs, chain tension and lube, coolant flush and fill, replaced some coolant line and petcock o-rings. (painted a few things, muffler and coolant tubes, thermostat housing, heat shield under air box and kickstand and some tires (10 years ago but they aren't cracking). I just had the carbs cleaned in July and now she's running again and back on the road after 6 years. And that’s about it! I feel like I should do more but just not sure since she runs soooo good. (1 hiccup though, is that after 20 min of riding (first 50 km this year) I shut it off and it took a while to restart)
I put a set of air horns on for a while, they were great for stopping people from cutting you off and just to let them know that you were there. I didn't like the non-stock look, so I took them off.
My questions....
1. What should I set the idle at? right now it's at 1100 rpms, but is this too low since I don't have an oil mod
2. Do I put on the oil mod? are there multiple suppliers and are they still available?
3. Do I put in a lower temp stat? It's only got hot on me 25 years ago when I let it idle too long while talking with people.
4. What do I do if the cams are worn? I've never looked at the cams, but it's been suggested that I check them for wear.
5. Should I have the valve openings checked? I've never had them looked at.
6. Anything else I should do as preventative maintenance? or upgrading?
I'm very handy (not a mechanic) I've done all my own auto work. I've just not ever done much with motorcycles.

 

Welcome here and stay awhile. Thats a great looking Interceptor Dad, and its amazing considering it has been idle a long time. I would leave it as is. You likely won't be putting big miles on it. Take the boys for a ride and enjoy that sweet Interceptor.
