Hi guys, after 10 years with Ducati's (ST4S and SS1000DS) in my garage/workshop, it's time to let the wrist rest a bit, I want to get back on a VFR again, (before kid's and house mortgage, I had a RC24, and got more than 97,000 km round in Europe on that, it still stand's for me as wery nice bike, or maybe it just because I was a lot yonger then :)) so currently I'm on the hunt after a late RC46 model (not VTEC) just not sure if it worth the extra waiting time to get the opdated vertion (2000-2001) of the RC46 model, there's a lot more to choose from if I include the first years??

    5th gen VFR was '98 - '01. I don't think there is any reason to exclude the '98 - '99 models.
Some would argue those are better.
For reasons that just sank in my beer glass. Weird. :drink1:

Off the top of my balding head, the difference between the '98/'99, and the '00/'01 was mostly added exhaust emission items. Such as, O2 sensers in the exhaust down pipes, smaller diameter exhaust down pipes, and a "wax unit" replaced the manule enricher (AKA Choke lever). There may be more, but I'm too lazy to look it up at this point.

Hello and welcome to the nuthouse! I think that going with a gear-driven cam model years 98-01 is a very wise choice. I am, however, biased, as I owned one for 11 years. Still miss that baby....

    Welcome.. Fellow Dane here.

There really isn't any major differences between the 2 models. I have a 2000 and prefer the later ones. But others prefer the earlier models. It's pretty much down to personal taste.

Personally, I prefer the later ones because of the minor changes. The wax unit works well and I think it's a better option that the manual "choke". In reality, all it does is raise the idle to about 2000 until the temp gets to about 76C, which even in cold weather takes no more than a couple minutes. Then it drops down to normal idle.
You won't even notice it, but I think it makes the bike feel more modern and hassle free, because you don't have to do any of it yourself.

I would also argue that O2 sensors are a benefit. even if you swap out the headers for "cat-less" ones.

A belated welcome to the World. I am sure you will find some here with similar interests as you and will be a great help should you encounter issues with your ride you may need help with. If all you need is a cheap male hooker, look no further than Derstuka. He is our moderator specimen of low morals here.

Thanks for a warm welcome, my purchase is getting narrowed: I'm going for a 2001 (hope black) RC46, from north of Germany, hopefully getting it home before vinter, nice to have somthing to look forward to do in my workshop during vinter time, and I dislike an emty MC lift !!

I dunno. Looks like a perfectly logical place to store one's hedge trimmer to me.

Welcome aboard, I think the 98-99 models are the best with the catless headers, but buy the best one you can find,I bought a beauty this year, 99 with only 15k miles, like new.
