VFR800 FI X Dash Problems

When I turn my lights on my indicator dash lights turn on, I have been searching everywhere for a short but can't find anything. Anyone come across this sort of thing before?

 

Both on, no flashing? Serious question, what happens when you use the indicators (lights on and off)?

Any difference between sidelights, full and high beam? Looking at the wiring diagram, my first thought is a bad earth somewhere that is earthing back through the dash lights. Do the high beam and instrument lights come on as well (you need to be in a pretty dark garage to see the instrument lights)?

 

Indicators work fine, found out the other dash lights don't work, when you switch the lights on the indicator bulbs light up like the dash should

 

99% sure that's an earth problem. Just trying to follow it through, bear with me...

Have you had the instrument cluster out yet? What about the high beam warning light - does that come on?

The indicators and high beam warning light all share an earth in that cluster (separate from the circuits for oil pressure, neutral and Fi), and they are (in theory) on the same earth circuit as the instrument lights. I'm thinking that something is awry on the circuit board and the earth current from the instrument lights is somehow finding it's way to the indicator and high beam light group.

 

The high beam light does not work at all but I know the bulb works as I swapped the bulbs with indicator so it makes sense.

 

Do you have a wiring diagram for the bike? I'd try removing the high beam bulb and seeing what happens, then seriously look for where the instrument cluster is earthed.

Have a look round where the high beam light plugs in, maybe for a track that has lifted and got folded back on itself and is touching something else. Failing that, earth blocks and what do the indicator lights do if you turn the indicators on?

 

The bulbs flash as normal on the dash but the other stays illuminated.

 

If you look at the top left of that wiring diagram, I reckon the solid green wire that connects indicator lights, high beam light and instrument lights has 12 volts on it for some reason, and there is an earth path through the other side of the indicator lights (the orange and light blue wires) somehow. That would also mean a poor or broken earth in the instrument pod. Check for continuity (and resistance) between the green wires to the instrument lights and the battery negative.

 

Update, found out that some of the printed circuit Is broken so had to bridge some of the earth with soldering so all working with led upgrade now cheers guys
