IIRC the neutral light circuit lights up when you have an earth path through the neutral switch (in neutral). If that switch was FUBAR or you had another earth path (e.g. worn insulation on the wire leading to the neutral switch then you could light up the indicator in any gear.

You can also get an earth path through the clutch switch (lever pulled in) and sidestand switch but only if the diode is allowing current to flow both ways.

thanks, terry. i haven't had any time to investigate. you know well that my '86 700 has no sidestand switch, right ? the problem didn't happen the last time i rode it, and no real changes happened.

thanks, terry. first thing i'm going to try is replacing the neutral switch from my parts motor.

Should be very easy to check the neutral switch in place: if you have continuity through it to earth in other than neutral then it's not working. If you only have continuity in neutral then it's good.

The RC24 manual is not quite as easy to follow as say the 46 but I would make an assumption that the clutch switch will perform the same path to earth function and cause the neutral light to illuminate IF the diode has failed.
