I have a 98 VFR 800. I bought it recently . lately the engines suddenly stop after starting to ride. It turns off I put it right away working and it never happens again during the ride. And it doesnt happen always its random. It just happens in the first 500 meters. No f1 error codes come up, just the oil light turns on. And its a little bit scary because the other day it happen when I was curving and the wheel locks. At first it happen once then for two weeks never happen again then it started doing it again and after the last incident I took it to the mechanic he as been taking it for a ride and never happens. If someone has an idea I would be really glad!

Sidestand switch/clutch switch broken? Jump the wires and check if it works or not.

Hi Sean and welcome to the MadHouse:Welcome:

When you get time please visit the Introductions part of the forum and say Hi to the rest of the folks on here and tell us a bit more about you and your VFR. The folks on here really like photos, so don't forget to add a photo or two of the bike. - Its easy click the "Upload a file" link and follow the prompts to select and upload a file from your computer.

As for the bike cutting out I suspect its electrical. If the issue was poor fuel/ fuel supply - then it would probably have just been stuttering, rather than cutting out completely. So a few things spring to mind - basically check carefully the entire safety interlocks system - kill switch - clutch, neutral switch, and side stand switch.

If any of them are playing up it could produce the results you describe, however 800s are also known to suffer from electrical gremlins, and they too can result in the bike just shutting down if the charging system volts drop too low. So its probably worth checking your battery is in good order, is holding a decent charge and the battery terminals are not loose.

Hope that helps - Let us know how you get on.

A sticking fuel pump relay would cause these symptoms. They're cheap and easy to replace, so it would be the first thing I'd renew to eliminate it as the cause.

I agree that it's probably electrical. If check the main fuse holder and fuses for corrosion. I had this problem last year. A voltmeter could help as you would also experience low voltage.
