Number 3 son bought a '95 VF500F, sorta running as it made the 5 mile trip back to the house. Since then, it has been completely unreliable, and simply quits running at random intervals. He's decided that the problem is the CDI boxes. Is the CDI system a known problem for this bike? Is there a go-to replacement?

It could be other things. I had a problem with mine randomly cutting out and it was just a loose battery connection or a bad ground. I can't remember which at the moment.

If it is the spark boxes then then I can recommend the V4Spark boxes as a very good alternative.

Also the battery going bad can cause some crazy stuff, like just absolutely falling on it's face all of a sudden. So check that first and of course what bk94si mentioned.
