Oil filter wrench: Do you use one or no?

Take a 6" square of old t-shirt, stretch it over the end, tap on the filter socket with a rubber hammer, and that will provide a surprising amount of grip. It will even overcome the dealers assembler torquing the filter to the ridiculous Honda spec. I have even seen it done with sandpaper.

I use a generic oil filter wrench to remove my filters but then I hand-tighten when installing the new one. I think they're a nice-to-have.

 

Just used one yesterday. The problem for years before was that I hadn't found one that fit the Honda filter snugly. Now that I have a good, firm grip on it, the process is much more fun. (Still can't say that I'm in love with all those "A" style clips in the fairing panels, though. The one at the front of the lower cowls always has to be pried out because of a build-up of road grit.)

 

Yeah, those clips seem like they will disintegrate each time you touch them. I have yet to actually break one, though. I want to order spares just for peace of mind.

 

Yes, extra clips are nice to have around and I've replaced a couple. I got my extra "A" clips from Bike Bandit. For the Gen 8 they're Honda Part #90116-SPO-003, named "Clip, Bumper Seal."

 

My VFR turned 579 miles old today so I gave its first oil change. I already had a gallon of Honda Pro GN4 10W-30 oil, Honda filter, and crush washer, but didn't have a filter wrench that fit. A quick trip to Wally World scored a $4.44 64mm filter wrench that fit perfectly on my VFR's filter to remove the original and torque the replacement to 19 lb-ft. It also fits the oil filters that Honda has used on virtually every one of their automobiles made in the last ~15 years. It was annoying to have to remove a dozen screws and clips, but not difficult. Once that was done, the rest was a piece of cake!

 

I just use these to give it a light snug on install and it just takes a light grip to unsnug it at removal time...works especially good with header downtubes that run close to the filter. Keeps your dick skinners away from anything hot.

That is because they are basically the same filter, just deeper so holds more oil. I have been using Bosh's Honda Civic filter on my bike for years and years because I can get them at wally World cheap. They are the same at least back to 2003 maybe farther back. Sere still the same in 2011 too.

 

About the only time I need to use a wrench or tool to remove my filter is when some tech put it on far too tight. That has been the case with my trucks and my bike. When I put them on it is still quite tight but I manage to get them off by hand. Years ago I went out and bought this tool. It is very versatile and can be used on just about any sized filter.
