I feel that you only get to make a FIRST IMPRESSION--ONCE. Perhaps you just got LUCKY you were not singled out in a negative way. Maybe the field(s) you pursued did not have that dress "expectation".
Most of the business world still has that certain "dress" expectation and the higher up the corporate ladder one goes the more likely the expectation is a suit and tie.
Is that changing--YES. Is it a good thing or a bad thing--matter of opinion.
Based on the "norm" for today though I still think the clothes one wears WHENEVER IN PUBLIC make a STRONG first impression.

To give food for thought. If there were a candidate running for President and he wore a man bun and shorts or she wore tight spandex pants and low cut top how far do you think they would make it in their campaign efforts?? Based on the; dare I say it MAJORITY of the population, not very far.

Each to their own and the right to express their individuality but there are industries which STILL DO have a dress code and expectation.

If you were starting all over again in the job market, and wanted a position in the corporate world (stock trader for example) would you gamble on the shorts and a manbun or go for the shirt and tie or maybe a full suit?

While the clothes don't make the man; his qualifications do that, they DO Make a STRONG FIRST IMPRESSION which can mean the difference between a follow up interview or a complete dismissal from the hiring pool--based on that FIRST IMPRESSION. Is that right? Likely NOT. But there is still a dress expectation in many many industries. From corporate suit types to car mechanics who are asked to wear the shop coveralls to have a "neater" appearance.

A calculating man studies his options and typically will "dress for success" rather than expressing his individuality before being interviewed and hopefully hired.

Let me end by saying-NOT trying to be Antagonistic--just expressing a counterpoint based on personal experiences.

    Best to all.

    Rick

To paraphrase Sheldon Cooper: "Those are very cogent and reasonable statements." "I reject them all." :)

And look at what reliance on the respect for how you dress got us for prez. :)

Actually my parents said almost the same thing word-for-word when I went to interview for the job that I held for the next 40 years. "Cut your hair" "Are you going dressed like that?" For the record, I didn't cut my hair, and yes I did go "dressed like that".

FWIW I grew up in the 60's and 70's, when we were trying to not judge people by how they dressed. I guess it just stuck with me.

I just read an article in a magazine today. It said if you drink every day, you are an alcoholic.

Thank fuck I only drink every night.
