There is a reason why the whole " cruiser " thing has gone from strength to strength, the cruiser set tend to get together in a group & go riding to a destination and socialize, not all cruisers are Harley's, there are a lot of metric cruisers out there as well, granted they handle like drunken walruses, and there seems to be a "wannabe biker" thing going on but hey to each his own right ?, and yes there are some real badass's that ride Harley's but there are bad people in all social groups, investors in suits that steal old peoples money are not as easy to spot as a 6'4" gorilla with a beard most of us could only dream of. Most gang type dudes I ever met really just want to be left alone & the whole intimidating look thing is as much to keep people at a distance more than anything else. Don't get me wrong, they are in no way shape or form choir boys but it is easy inches for the press rather than unraveling a string of lies from a smooth talking lawyer/ investment broker type.
The sport bike boys get together to go riding fast, & if you are out on a deserted country road then while not ideal I can live with it, although track days are better, the whole screaming around the streets in traffic is just plain dangerous for both riders & everybody else in the blast zone. the "I don't give a f.... & "I'll do want I want & don't give a shit about anybody else" attitude portraits zero respect for all other road users, anybody can pull the trigger & go fast, the cemetery is full of them.

What you say about the sport bike riders is very true. But have you ever been behind a bunch of cruiser-type bikes when they're in "parade mode", which is
a lot of the time when there's a large group. You can get stuck behind a bunch going 45-50 mph on a two lane road, with no chance of passing because they
are so close together. Talk about "I don't give a f.... & "I'll do want I want & don't give a shit about anybody else" attitude".

100%, other end of the spectrum, going so slow & not giving a rats ass about other road users, I have never understood the whole "form ranks & tootle along" bollocks, at least they are not going to kill themselves & others by riding fast & reckless.

No joke, at the speed they're usually going they could hit a brick wall with little damage. :)

That is also what pisses me off with the Harley, almost everybody seems to automatically assume you are a gang member, bloody annoying.
So we rocked up to a pub during our last ride for a drink & a burger, the Harley boys didn't want to talk to us, because we were riding mostly with Japanese sports bikes, the sports bike boys wouldn't talk to us cos we were riding Harley's, good job we like our own company :drink1:

Well don't feel too bad. I was actually denied a room at a mostly empty motel one time when I rode in on
a '71 Triumph Bonneville with TT pipes and extended forks, yeah young and foolish. They took one look
and said "Sorry we're full". "Vacancy" sign in full view out the front window. Of course this was back in the
    early 70's.

Been there too many times. If they don't show civility and give me the chance to pass, I just do it anyway and cut in between them as necessary. They don't seem to like "their space" being invaded but I don't give a damned. Idiots should be incarcerated. It's a fad thing to say we incarcerate too many people. I don't think we incarcerate enough people. Stupidity should be punished.

It's not that we incarcerate too many, it's that we incarcerate too many of the wrong ones. And let the politicians go free. :)

I disagree with your "at least they are not going to kill themselves." Riding in large groups, within a few feet of each other, does not bode well for the average Harley rider, when the lead rider brakes sharply. They tend to go down like 10 pins because of their close proximity and lack of riding skills.

If you want to see how bad the average Harley rider is, go to Deals Gap and watch them wobble around the corners at slow speeds. The most dangerous thing about riding a sport bike there is having a 900 lb Harley come head on into your lane, with the overweight rider, which adds another 250-300 lbs. There is nothing more pathetic than seeing a Harley tiptoe around a corner at 15 mph, when an average sport bike rider could take it at 50 mph.

When I am really old, my eyesight fading, my reflexes shot, I will buy a Harley. It will be fun even with the loss of my skills, to be a bike god, riding around 99% of Harley riders on the corners.

Really ? "most dangerous thing about riding a sport bike is being hit by a Harley" really ?
I would have thought screaming through heavy traffic seems to kill most of em.

Maybe it's a cunning plan to knock out all the sportbike riders thereby achieving world dominance and creating a Harley Heaven ?

I would say so. I don't exactly fit the caricature, OK, maybe the "Colin Ferrell stubble", but I'm definitely treated as such. As others said, it could be totally demographic/generational; the old guys are riding American and metric cruisers which tend to cost more and the young "adults" are mostly into superbikes and supersports. And the latter tend to take more chances in traffic, speed, etc.
