Bike cought on fire! UPDATED WITH PICS

    http://share.shutterfly.com/action/welcome?sid=0CcM27Vy2ZMXjA

    Check out the damage...

I cant believe it.. The Voltage regulator heated up and meted the wires so badly the were on fire last night! Damaged the seat, small left faring that is under the seat and the fuel pump is damaged.

Can you believe this? I put it up for sale last night in the classifieds, $1200 as is.

I am also looking into the cost of replacing the regulator and damaged pieces... After reading late last night I discovered these regulators are a major problem in this generation.

This is the VFRs only real downfall...

Its important to check connections as a regular maintenance do it this problem.
Also, a suggestion thats been made a 100 times is installing a voltage meter, so you know when things begin to go wrong!!!
(before connections start to fry !!!!)

Sorry to hear about the bike, that REALLY sux.
I'd fix it if I were you...dont sell it.

    Great balls of fire

Were you riding the bike or was it just idling in your garage?

Also, what year is your bike?

I was riding the bike down the street like Ghost Rider.. I wish I had a camera! Would be the #1 pic on the site!
Thank God it happened near my house, I was able to pull it into the driveway and take care of things. Otherwise the whole bike would have burned to the ground once the fuel line was exposed.

    The bike is a 1986 700 F2...

Anyway, after everything cooled down including myself, I was able to get a look at everything. It is not as bad as it seems, at least from a running bike perspective. The fairing is shot.

    So here goes.

The Regulator/rectifier is shot, all wires that connect to it are melted about half way to the main harness.
    http://www.regulatorrectifier.com/c...a-vfr750f-700f-regulator-rectifier-p-778.html

The top of the fuel pump is burned so for safety reasons I will replace that
    * where can I get one? Any suggestions? I found this on ebay.. .Do you know if I can get a magna, 87 VFR, 00 VFR fuel pump? What is compatible?
    http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/HOND...016QQitemZ260160955581QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW

Or this one from an 83 750 vfr magna.. looks identical

After looking at the Clymer manual, it looks like the alternator and the relay starter switch connected to the regulator at some point, so I need to see if those wires melted.

A computer fan will be tied into the rear brake and taillight (only draws minimal) for safety reasons.
    * any recommendations? Battery operated rather than tie it in?

It looks like the old solder gun will come out and I will be making lots of nice connections this week. If anyone has already experienced this issue let me know what to look for. Maybe it can save some time.

search the posts on this site...
Theres been a lot of talk lately about R/R mods, relocation, wiring, fan mods...etc...etc...
both in the "3rd generation" section and in the "mechanics garage"
even though your bike is a 700f its shouldnt be drasticlly different than a 3rd Gen.

You'll get sooooo much valuable feedback on your questions from some of these threads already posted here!!!

    Good luck

I think she deserves a day at the "spa" after the fire and all. If you think that whole fire thing was stressful for you, think about the poor bike, being on fire and everything.:target:
