    Hi
It nearly starts, then a very loud backfire. Does this indicate a timing problem?

    Many thanks

    Simon

unlikely on a VFR unless cams were removed recently for valve clearance adjustment.

Fuel starvation unless you’ve pulled the engine down

your starting fuel enrichment device (choke) system could be clogged. drain the float bowls and try again. and how long since your last ride ??

You don’t mention model, history or anything.
We can only guess without more information.

    Thank you for the replies
5th generation 1998. Things are getting worse, I have no fuel pump sound now when I switch the ignition on. I’ve checked the fuses around the battery area and all ok. Is there any other fuses anywhere?

With no fuel pump noise, that is the first place I would start. Doesn't matter what else works, but
if the fuel pump no worky, then bike no runny. Get out the ol' multi-meter and check voltage at the
    pump.

you'll need to drain and flush petrol tank then fill with fresh fuel.
