5th Gen Cams ?

    Okay, I thought I knew, then to double check my thinking I wasn't finding what I was looking for, so time to ask.
    Two part question actually. One, is there a engine serial number guide that tells what years engine it is? Second, looking for cam specs comparing 98-99 to 00-01s. I have a feeling they are different. sorta like the CA version is. we all know the 00-01 have cats, different ECU and FI, but so far I'm not finding anything that's black and white. When looking at part numbers they sorta say they are the same, Sorta? Any one have a 00-01 factory Honda service manual? one could compare those specs Mine is a 98-99 specific manual. Which also gives me a feeling there's more than meets the eye here.

    The manual I have states it is for 98-01, and lists some different cam lifts for CA vs the rest of the world, but no difference for the different years.

    From the Partzilla lists for a front intake cam, it is said to be for the following:

    This Honda 14110-MBG-000 (SOURCE: VINTAGE PARTS INC.) fits the following models and components:

    From that I would conclude (maybe erroneously) that the CA model used a specific cam for 98/99 but reverted to the same cams as everyone else from 2000 (when the cat was installed cleaning up emissions so the breathing restriction was no longer needed?).

    Your post, and another from GreginDenver (talking about slight differences in the clutches between the 98-99 and 00-01 bikes) has me wondering...

    I mentioned in another thread that I've bought a spare, lower-km engine to put in my bike later this year (after a refurb of "consumable parts" etc.)

    The engine is out of a 2000 model. The bike is a 1999.

    I'm 99% certain I can swap it into the '99 bike, utilising existing wiring/ECU etc. to "drive" it...But have I got it wrong? Are there enough differences between the two that I might need to do more work to make that engine work in my '99?

    Or am I just being paranoid?

    From the research and conversations I've had since posting this, I believe the 2000 engine as in just the cylinders and head go are the same, in your case you would need to use your exhaust header, FI fuel system along with the 99 ecu, and more then likely the associated wire harness, as those items are different.

    Yes, that was my thinking.

    In other words, "refurb" the 2000 engine (new thermostat, o-rings, coolant hoses, plugs, stator, clutch plates*/springs etc.). Remove the '99 engine. remove throttle bodies from it, refurb those (new hoses, install refurb'd 2000 injectors, as they are the same part, according to Partzilla), and re-install on Y2K engine.

    The throttle body wiring will (obviously) connect straight into the existing harness. I'm guessing that all other sensors etc. are in consistent locations between the two engines(?)

    *GreginDenver's post about the differences between the 98-99 clutch setup (number of plates etc) would tend to suggest that there may be differences there, but - as I think he mentioned in his post on the subject - the parts diagrams match. As an example, both diagrams show the "Seat, judder spring", but the y2k diagram doesn't list it as a part...Can anyone confirm that the two clutches are the same between the two, or that they are different? If different, surely they'd actuate the same way (via pushrod), so it would just be a matter of installing the bits for the y2K engine, and all of the ancillary stuff in the clutch (hydraulics/pushrod) would interchange (assuming the clutch internals are different between the two).

    Maybe I'm over-thinking this...

    I've read the clutches one or the other has an extra plate, which one does, I've haven't dug into this. just know the 98-99 has 9 friction discs if that helps any. Reason I say wire harness is the start up enrichner on the 00-01 is all ecu sensor driven by water temp. on the 98-99 it's all manual, so hence there's probably a wire or two not needed, now how that works out, I've haven't a clue but keeping your FI shouldn't cause any hic ups.

    Are you talking about the fast idle wax unit? Because that system is an analog/mechanical system that directly uses coolant temperature, no electronics. All FI bikes change the amount of fuel going in the engine based on engine temp and a bunch of other stuff. I know the 2000+ have an O2 sensor in the exhaust somewhere if that's what you were talking about.

    Definitely no judder spring and less plates on the 00/01 clutch.
    I believe the only cams that are different are the CA type.
    You will need to use the 98/99 TB’s as well as the thermostat housing and ECU on the new 00 motor.
