    Hi all,

I have a 2004 VTEC which I have imported into the UK from Oman. Today bike was running fine, got home, parked up, no problems. Went to take it out couple of hours later but the engine cuts out when I engage first gear. I presume it is a problem with the sidestand engine cut off switch which seems to think the side stand is still down! I have checked the wiring and connectors at the side stand and can see no obvious problem. Sadly my electrical technical expertise ends at this point! Anyone have any ideas about how to fix or what else to check? Is there an obvious fuse to check/replace?

    Regards

    Ian

Just do a normal continuity test at the switch using a voltmeter/ohmmeter. Easy, takes a couple minutes.

Make sure the sidestand switch is being fully released too. Also make sure the clutch is being fully depressed when starting in gear.

You could always unplug it, and give it a try. Then you'll know if that's your problem.

You can't unplug it to get around it, at least on my '92 that is. The engine module needs to see a ground so that it knows the stand is up. You can do a simple continuity test with the connector unplugged and an multi meter. I had the same problem as you and it ended up being the side switch. Temporarily I just cut the harness leaving enough room to repair it later if need be and tied the two wires together. There should be 3 wires coming out of the switch. A signal wire, and ground wire, and a panel wire that goes up to the dashboard to turn on/off the side stand light. I forget which colors are which but if you have your service manual it should be easy enough to figure out. Tie the ground wire and the signal wire together and make sure the panel wire for the light doesnt ground out on the frame to keep the light out and you will be all set until you can get a new switch. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Thanks for the responses all. Have been away all weekend so have not been able to look at it. Will get a meter tomorrow and try to sort it!

You can also just jumper the two plugs connected to the switch. Makes it think the stand is up.

Good deal, glad that's all it was. You can probably just mess with the switch so it works again instead of buying a new one.

I had my fingers replaced with robotic typing fingers made out of titanium and aluminum alloys just for this site. I wanted to be able to post like NO OTHER has posted before! Now that is devotion...

Latest update on my long running saga of getting my imported vfr on the road. Got the sidestand problem sorted, got the clocks sorted, headlights sorted.................now the battery has decided to go flat lol!! Been out today and bought an optimate charger, hopefully that will do the trick. Now all I have to do is present it for the SVA inspection, register it and hope weekends continue to be good riding weather! Will update as it happens............

Battery dead, hmm. Better check the voltage at idle and 5k rpm's once you get it charged. Might need a R/R and wiring job.
