Hi! My name is Tyler and I am new to vfrworld. A couple years ago I bought a non running 1986 (I believe) vf500f along with a parts bike and a mountain of parts. Ultimately decided it was outside of my mechanical ability. I am now trying to find a mechanic who either specializes in these or just has the ability to fix it for me. I am located near wichita Kansas but I am willing to travel if there is someone out there who can work on it. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

What's wrong with it? Other than the carbs needing to be rebuilt?

Whenever you try to start it it acts like its starving for fuel so probably carbs but im not sure if its just carbs or if there are other issues as well. Thats why im looking for someone who is familiar with these so they can further diagnose.

The bike sat. It's guaranteed your carbs are blocked up. I hope I don't get any flack for this...

Go to www.v4musclebike.com and reach out to Magnandy there. Andy is in Canada so the shipping can be a little costly. Andy is a MASTER of v4 carbs and I guarantee your bike will run like brand new.

If you don't want to ship to Canada you can also send to Billyc, but your wait time might actually be a bit longer as Billy gets pretty bogged down with a ton of work. To be clear thats not a knock in any way. If anything its testament to how good Billy is! Either way you will end up with a good running bike. On a side note either of these guys will rebuild your carbs for WAY less than a mechanic would and will do a far better job.

If you are serious about getting your bike running you should start there regardless of your mechanical skills. Be sure to dump out the gas tank and put in fresh fuel!

Thank you! I will probably do that. I removed the carbs with the intent to do that at one point. I also attempted to reinstall them too just to have the bike fully put together for storage and found that they were an absolute nightmare to reinstall. Any tips on that would be appreciates too if anybody has any.

Loosen up the rubber carb isolators and put a little motor oil on to slick them up. Seat the rears first then get a 2 foot long 2x4 and stand it on end between the front carbs. Use a good heavy hammer and whack it a few times. It will slip right into place.

One other tip.. Put the isolators someplace warm to soften them up a little. If they are dried out you will need to soften them with Magnandy wintergreen oil recipe.

    Works like a champ!

Looks like you have some great help going on in here. I am willing to try and fix anything, but I would not be fast. However, I am in the ol' Doodah too. I can provide local assistance if any is needed. If anything, I can provide local riding once you get the Beast up and running. Good luck with the project!

Been doing it for years with literally dozens of V4 carb installs. Never had a problem.

I have had my carbs off & on several times in an afternoon. Key is understanding that the throats don’t line up with boots until they are in place. With the boots on the engine and a little grease in side them, barely seat the rear carbs first, then with a pry bar or 2x4, gently push carbs back till the other throats are close to lining up. I use a big flat blade to push the other boots so that they catch on the carbs then press down hard and rock back amd forth till they pop on. It is an aquired knack, after you have done it a few times, it’s not so hard. Make sure all clamps are on, but loose (both screws).
