My 1992 vfr just died at stop light HELP...

Driving home from work i work about a 2 miles from. Bike was running fantastic pulled up to stop sign she dies. Try to start her nothing not even turning over so i try blinker light very dim on dash try to bump start it nothing. So push it home 4-5 blocks about 10-15 min get home try to start bike it turns over almost like the battery had more juice then wheni tried to start it when it originally died on me anyone have any ideas on this. I don't have meters or anything like that to test it i just put it on battery tender it's been om tender 30 min bike just fired right up ANY IDEAS WOULD BE GREAT.. .

 

Buddy, you can't own a Honda 'cycle without at least a basic multimeter to check the charging system !

One of three things: battery-sounds like that may still be good, but you will need to make sure it is topped up on the inside and fully charged to be sure.
Alternator-ugh.
Regulator-not so bad, but can be expensive.

Either way, you will need a meter.

I was commuting to work one day and stopped at a light when my bike died. It was the battery. But mine did not recover like yours is doing.

Another time I was riding along at 50 mph and it just started sputtering like it was out of gas. The lights were a bit dim. While waiting for the tow truck, it did fire back up for about 45 seconds once. Then it blew a fuse. This time it was the regulator. One made specifically for my bike was over $130, but I found one made for a quad with the same specs just different mounting package for $50. That has been on my bike for about two years now without a problem.

Ok not sure if i am doing this post right i got a tester battery read like 12.70 charged up then when hooked up to bike with bike running volts drop to 11.30 can someone tell me how to hook connecters up to test rectifier and the stator please i thank everyone for the help

 

the service manual shows how to test AC output from the stator. if stator checks good the r/r is probably bad.

 

I know this is an old thread, but just incase someone is experiencing this, its your r/r. Replace it with an 09-14 OEM R1 r/r. Get the connector kit and you wont have anymore issues. https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https://www.ebay.com/ulk/itm/293286019587

I bought a couple mofset (FH020AA) from salvaged FJ-09, FJR, etc. and connectors separately. I wouldn't even hesitate to replace the R/R and get rid of the OEM non-mofset. My wires were fried but the stator was OK.

 

The fried wires are usually a sign your r/r is gone! Specially were the connector is. I soldered mine with better guage wires. No more issues! I can send you pictures if needed how I have it set up. Pretty simple, just let me know.

 

not necessarily a bad r/r, but if the melted wires touch it will kill the stator.

 

Agreed! It can kill the stator, just test it to make sure its still in working order and to rule it out!
