That was a great read - thanks for posting. I didn't realize the 5th gen was the first to get the side mounted radiators and linked brakes - I always assumed those were only on the 6th gen.

Interesting that they were able to keep the wet weight just below 500 at 499 pounds. Did the 5th gen have a center stand included as standard equipment or was that an accessory that would have pushed the wet weight over 500 lbs? If it was an extra weight accessory than that will make me feel better about my 520+lb 8th gen :D

8th feels as light or lighter than my 5th, so it doesn't really matter as it's about how it 'wears' the weight. You can feel the weight in the 6th gen though due to that under-tail exhaust. I noticed it every time I rode it.

5th gen engine may be a tad lighter, as is the 5th gen stock exhaust. That probably accounts for a portion of it.

Thanks, that's impressive that they kept it under 500 lbs wet with the center stand.

Yeah I don't really have any complaints about the weight of my 8th gen, especially now that I've shaved 8 lbs off it. Only time it feels heavy to me is when I'm pushing it around the garage and even then it's not that bad. Actually it did feel heavy to me after I sat on a '17 CBR1000RR and a leftover 8th gen at a dealer recently - I couldn't believe how light the CBR felt!

Some of the things that might contribute to the extra weight of 8th gen v. 5th gen could be slightly longer wheelbase (57.4 v. 56.7"), slightly bigger fuel tank (5.6 v. 5.5 gallon), slightly bigger front brakes (310mm v. 296mm), plus the ABS/traction control stuff on 8th gen must weigh a little something although I'm guessing the stuff for the linked brakes on 5th gen offsets that to some extent.

Yes, good read indeed, it was at this time in 98 I had a perfectly set up 4th gen, so saw no reason to put out the coin for the 5th. Now had they made it lighter from the start with a chassis similar to the CBR then maybe. Now that said since the 4th gen went bye bye. I did end up with a pretty nice 5th gen. But I've taken one step better, made it light with more get up and go, with better suspension and got rid of those god forsaken linked brakes. Now it's perfect.
