My 86 750 seems to have a high idle. If I push the choke all the way forward it wants to stall. Any suggestions. Thanks.

you backed off the idle adjustment screw ? too much choke will almost always stall the engine, and that's normal.

Thank you, I will give that a try. That sounds like that could be the problem. Do you think that could have something to do with it feeling sluggish in say 3rd gear at slow speeds? 35 or less. I just finally got this bike in riding condition, so I do not know the in's and out's of the V4 as yet. Any idea where I can buy new brake rotors?

it's not good to lug the engine at too low a speed in too high a gear.

what's wrong with the rotors ?

By saying that when you "push the choke all the way forward" you mean off choke. Correct? If so, then it sounds like you have some blockage in a fuel path in the carbs. If it will only idle with some choke, that tells me that one of the jets in the carb are plugged to some degree.

The rotors I suspect are original. They would have about 64k miles on them. I mic'd them and the fronts are
at the service limit. Rear is ok. I am also going to put on a premium set of pads.

Back to idle for a moment, I am trying to set mixtures on my 86 500 with a tachometer and regardless of which plug I set it on, the tach jumps around and I can't get an accurate reading from which to set my mixture. The bike idles fine and does not seem to be loping or coughing and the tack is o.k. and wiring is fine. Bike starts, idles and revs fine but I think my mixtures are a bit off and I can't get the sync just right. Pulls fine and I ride up to around 6k and find the buzzing a bit annoying. Hoping it is just a sync issue as I can deal with that easy enough.

Agreed. If they aren't grooved or pulsing, get another set of pads out of them.

Mixture or synch? They are very different. Idle mixture is your pilot screws, the one's you can get to from the side after removing factory plugs. Synch screws are on the linkage and need a special tool if the bike is assembled.

And anything happening at 6K is likely neither. You are out of the pilot jets at that point and any tiny differences in throttle plates synch would be virtually undetectable.
