New to the motorcycle world and have my first bike. I have a friend who had this bike sitting in garage and I offered to buy. Then helped him get a new truck so he just signed it over to me. Regaurdless I am the proud new owner of a 1995 VFR750F. I think it is awesome. It has 9117 miles on it with a few scratches here and there but looks great. It has been sitting in garage for nearly 4 years. I changed oil, gas, radiator fluid, air filter, and put new battery in. To my surprise it fired right up!! After my excitement died down a little, I noticed a very loud knocking noise coming from what sounds like the right upper front side of motor. It is very loud and sounds like a rod knock in a car. It is constant and is herd at all speeds. It does not effect the performance of the motor as it runs strong. I joined this site a little while back and have been reading as much as possible and I have come to the conclusion that it is either a rod or a stuck valve. My question is, is there anything I can do if it is a stuck valve other then tear motor down? And once I get motor apart do I have to replace valve or just clean up and put back together?? Any help or advise or anyhting would be great as I am clueless. I dont know anything about bikes but am good at tinkering with things. This site is great and I am excited to be apart of the VFR world.

Valvetrain noise is in "half speed" relative to crankshaft rotation. put a large screwdriver against the engine and put the other end under your the knuckle of your thumb. Put that knuckle against your ear. It'll sound like you're inside the engine. Move the screwdriver from place to place on the engine. You'll soon know where the noise is from and whether the frequency is in time with the crank or in time with the valvetrain.

    Mike,

Please consider some training! It's a lot of bike the first time out, take it slow and easy, keep that throttle wrist flat, and wear your gear!

I am a big believer in training, it's much cheaper than learning the hard way.

    Enjoy your new bike!

Thanks for advise. They do offer a riding coarse in Ohio and am checking into it. But would not ride without the gear. For right now I'm just driving around small neighborhood and a open parking lot. I think I will be grounded there until I can get alot more riding time and training coarse in. Got a long ways to go but excited.
