Oil Leak and Cluster Temperature

So I noticed a very small leak coming from the attached picture area, while engine was running.

Does anyone know if it's #8 causing this leak?

Also, on a 90 degree day while bike is idling on a center stand is temp of 220-230 acceptable or should I install a manual toggle switch for the fan?

That may be a point of a potential leak. If it were me, I would clean the area of all oil and dirt, and check back after a short run. That is very close to the oil drain plug, has the oil been changed recently? If so, was a new crush washer used? Again, I would clean that area of the motor then look for the source of the leak.

As far as coolant temps go, 220 and above are normal at any air temp if you let it idle long enough. The question is; does the fan come on at or around 220 degrees? It should. And when it does, the coolant temp should begin to drop soon after.

 

prolonged idling isn't good or necessary, just ride the bike.

suggest u remove 90deg fitting to check for 0-ring or gasket failure.. careful not to over-tighten !

 

Thanks everyone, yes I did change the oil and used a new crush washer. It wasn't there by PO.

SM, would there be any huge oil leak if I remove that 90deg fitting, suspect no, right? In terms of o-ring, can I use any o-ring I might have to try one laying around or else wait to receive the new one.

 

Are there any symptoms of o-ring failure? Because I pulled it out today and to me it looked fine. Neither swelled or cracked or anything.

 

I had the exact same problem on mine last summer.
The rubber o ring has perished causing the leak.
Replace with a honda part as its an odd size.
I replaced both just to be safe, no problems since.

 

Thank, curious where is the other one located? Also, how many miles on your bike?

 

The other one is on the opposite side of the engine, i figured if one side is leaking the other side might start soon.
As for miles 50k and going strong.

 

I'll order a Honda one and then see if dripping is going to be fixed.

It looks like a coolant leak from the picture.

 

Sorry, yes I took the picture when coolant was dripping but highlighted area had some oil dripping too.

 

Clean it to get a better idea.
It could also be the gear shift seal.

 

I'm no mechanic but I agree Oz. You need to get that whole are cleaned and dry, then go for a run and then check it again to see just where that leak is coming from. You have stuff all over the place there and the source could be many things until you clean and dry the whole area up and take a look. I wouldn't really ride it too far though. You may just spread the fluid all over the place again if it leaks too much defeating the purpose of the clean-up.

 

I agree with both of you, will clean everything well with a degreaser today and ride around the neighborhood for 10-15 mins and then re-inspect it.
