So this last couple weeks I have been having an issue with my vfr. When I ride it long distances and park it and go to ride it again it act like it is not getting any fuel. It feels like it is running on 2 cylinders and like it is starving for fuel. I thought it might have been a fuel pump so I installed a new pump and new fuel filter. Everything was fine for a couple days then today it did it again. Acts like it is getting no fuel and running on 2 cylinders. I am stumped. Any thoughts at all.

Does it run normally at all?.
Is is only happening when hot?
    When was it last serviced.
When were the plugs last changed.
    How many miles on it.
When it's running bad which 2 does it run on. The down-pipe temps MAY help you figure out which are not running?
Has it been sat for a while.
When were the carbs last looked at.
When were the valves last checked
    The list goes on...lol

I dont know how long it has been sitting. I just checked the rear plugs and they looked fine. They were a nice even tan color. I have no idea about any previous services done to the bike other than me just changing the oil just now. It doesnt do it all the time. It is very sporadic when it happens. Do these have a fuel pump relay at all? I know the rectifier has been replaced and supposedly it has a new clutch in it but I doubt that.( it has alot of chatter when you first start it and go) I also installed new brakes sprocket and chain. I have a repair manual for it so I will see what it says

look in your manual for the fuel pump relay BYPASS procedure. pump relays fail more often than pumps themselves.

So question. How often should you be able to feel the fuel pump click when I hold it it is 1 to 2 seconds between pumps.

Ok bike has been running good since my last post. Well today it did it again lost power like it was getting any fuel and stalled completely. Would not start unless I opened the choke and even then it barely ran. Pulled back the rear cowl to look at the fuel filter and it was empty and slowly very slowly filling with fuel. Now the only time it does it is when I fill the tank and I didnt even fill it full. Could I possibly have a clogged petcock or is my tank vapor locking? I tried to start it with the fuel cap open and still nothing. Oh it was almost 100 degrees out today as well. Thanks for all the help

It's great that you positively identified the empty fuel filter. Is that before or after the pump? If before and it was empty, then you must have something preventing fuel flowing from the pump, given opening the cap didn't help (and it would if the vent was the problem) a blocked hose or filter sounds like a good diagnosis. If the filter is after the pump, then the above could apply or you're still looking at a possible pump issue.

That's what I am leaning towards. I put a new fuel line on it and removed the fuel filter and ran a line straight to the pump. Rode it to work this morning and it ran fine but it only happens when it is really hot outside and when the bike is hot

Well another update. After relocating the fuel line a bit rode it to work and gone no problem(one way to work is 20 miles) parked the bike for a good 30 minutes then went to leave and again acted like it was not getting fuel. Would barely run on choke. Checked fuel pump to make sure it was pumping and it is not clicking. Jumper wired the relay between the bbn lack/blue and black wire still nothing. Start fiddling around moving some wires and round and pump would randomly click. My guess is I have some bad wiring pulling off the side fairing today to check the harness. Another question should the side frame rails be getting extremely hot after riding. Could not place my hand on the lower frame at all.

Yes opened the fuel cap and no change in how it ran. I appreciate all the help. I can wiggle the fuel pump sometimes and it will click rapidly

you could try cleaning the contact points under the pump's black cover.

Well after tracking down the fuel harness. I found the problem. The new pump I got had the wire broke in the rubber. Made a new connection and started working then stopped again. Wiggled pump erratic pumping. Pulled the top cover off and found the power wire barely connected on the solder. Resoldered it bike fired right off. Now I need to find new side fairings and belly pan. Thank you for all the help. Ordering a new pump AGAIN lol
