Considering purchase of a VFR...

    Funny all you tall guys like the VFR. Heck I'm 5'8 and the bike sure feels fine to me too. Then again I also ride a cycle too, just not on the road. MTB for me, rigid singlespeed Surly 1X1.

    Biker7 you've got your work cut out for you on deciding which bike would be best. There's several on ebay that seem to be in really good shape but most are asking almost new cost. In most cases you can find a dealer with older stock that may be able to cut you a deal and get close to what a used bike may cost.

    Then again you can sometimes luck out and find someone that has an older model with very few miles in pristine shape for a great price. I'm just never lucky enough to find those deals, but I hear about them all the time!

    Which is your preference so far? New or older gen bike? Vtech, abs, what have you been leaning towards?

    Its a tough call because as you know there is no clear line in the sand or point of demarcation where VFR's evolve for the better. All model years have their strengths though likely the newest bikes are the best. They are all good but different. And you are absolutely right...a balance between age and related Gen and price. Because the VFR's are such fine bikes, resale is relatively good (for motorcycles :wink:) which removes some of the incentive to purchase used as you say. ABS for me is a jump ball because of the cost premium. The stock brakes are very good throughout the years. Vtech is a mixed blessing of course. I have a line on a very low miles 1998 red bike for a fair price that I am considering. The other side of me longs for the RWB 25th anniv. '07. Traveling has a cost as well and makes the transaction more messy...for not only inspection but commercial, transport etc. So you summarized the dilemma quite well. A good problem to have however. I will likely be riding on some version by late spring. :smile:

    George,
    If you are more a touring bias rider get a 6th gen (2002-2008). And if you are more of a performance rider - i.e. love the corners and the twistier the better get a 5th gen.(1998 - 2001) (I just love my 5th gen) If you need to go low buck a 4th gen (1994 - 1997) is pretty good too, I had one for 7 - 8 years.

    Thank you MD...am leaning toward a later model bike. I am likely a middle of the road rider compared to those on here and therefore a touring bias may fit my style the best.

    I have no choice but to rave about my 25th it is everything I want in a bike. I am an old bike guy too have over 20 years holding the handelbars and had 5 bikes now none better than the 07 I just bought in march. I have put almost 6000 miles on her in that short time with a 383 mile day as well with No back ache! So you have my vote 07 for shure. How can you go wrong?( My 25th is slighty modified & cost me around $3000.00 to do so!)

    The 25th is a flat gorgeous bike. Speaking of old and bad backs...of which I am guiltly of both...likely a good time to show my present bike...a Victory Vegas...slightly modded. The Arlen Ness inspired Vegas has classic cruiser riding position with forward controls. I have been tweaking the control position but am coming to the conclusion that the ergos just don't work for me. I need my feet under my back for support. Enter VFR800. So...I am looking for a VFR to perhaps supplement if not replace my Vegas. I like all kind of motorcycles and have owned a few like you have. The Vegas is a work of art to look at...motor has close to 100 ft lbs of torque and sounds glorious. It will run the quarter just behind the VFR but the bike is about style and sound. I need a riding position I can live with however. When I put my feet on the back pegs which is a bit of stretch :smile: my pelvis rotates forward, my back is supported and I feel better. Harley makes a bike similar in genre to the Vegas but would likely work better for me...an incantation of the V-rod. It comes in two forms...the Night Rod and Street Rod. The Street Rod has a slightly taller seat which is no issue for me because I have longish legs. The Night Rod has slightly more subdued ergos. The important thing is....they both have Mid-controls with the feet positioned where God intended...under the rider for support and control. So I might replace the Vegas with a Street Rod...not sure yet. But I want to pick up a VFR because it is a whale of a motorcycle and the controls are where they should be IMHO.

    I don't think you will be disipointed with a VFR. As for Hp and Torque check out my post in the general forum titled 07 25th Dyno it's the Dyno print out from this weekend. 113hp @ 10900 and 62 torque with just a few Mods. It is NOT a fake or miscalibrated like most of the guys are saying in replys.
