I've always hated this argument. You can lose all the weight in the world. But that does not change the base characteristics of the bike. Regardless of if you've lost weight or not you're still sitting on a bike that still isn't at its potential. Which at the root is the the reason for improving the bike.

I'll totally jump on on it if anyone wants to donate a couple bucks to my anemic bank account. I'll even do photos and an install video!

That's a good eye! And you're right totally missed that. Definitely the VFR because the crank case cover is the same color. I'll see if she can provide anything additional at this point.

Going to a full header I think it's more about loosing the cats and the benefit of that than it is weight savings... ??

How much of your bikes potential do you use when you ride it. Probably not more than 50 % if your being honest.

If you're tracking I'd say more than that. If your cutting up twisted more than that. And even a couple points off the bike changes the pitching speed which is huge for twisties. You can lose weight but ultimately you're still left with a relatively slow turning bike. I've personally dragged stock feelers on it and I've had it less than a month. And it dipping from side to side is improved with every pound shaved. Even ignoring that it improves low speed maneuvers.

Were talking about base performance of bikes. You can be the fattest of asses in the world and hop on a better weighted bikes and immediately see the benefuta of weight reduction.

I'd say I'm at least at 70% usage when I'm not commuting. And that is from having ridden faster bikes mostly and recognizing where modern VFR lacks. I'm sure most experienced righted can say the same.

But also one of the biggest benefits are being ignored and that's a cooler engine that directly resultant from the removal of a cat. This in turn directly translates to a longer lasting engine and a more comfortable ride.

The only weight saving on a bike weighting 1/4 ton that's going to make a difference you can feel is to reduce the unsprung weight on the front

I've replaced every fastner including the brake pins with titanium and the weight reduction is just short of 2&1/2 lbs

Can't agree with that. Sprung weight very much influences they way the bike behaves. Just using the Vfr800 as an example and ignoring my previous bikes when I dropped the muffler and took it around town I immediately noticed it handling different.

You look at potential savings on a fully loaded model. Deluxe in the US. It well within grasp to wind up with a sub 500lb bike which is a huge deal down from the 5 and a quarter it is stock.

Really though I'm damn amazed that you saved that much with swapping the bolts. Did you do this on the eighth Gen? Did you just natch bolts up or is there a specific kit available? That is really impressive.

There was an experiment done a good few years ago by a bike magazine where they took 2 R6s. Changed the pipes on both of them, altered the cams on one ( for a bit more low down) and left to other alone. They blind tested them on a group of bikers and the results were interesting. Most folk preferred the cammed bike because it produced more power and handled better, where in reality it actually made less bhp than stock .

If you want to increase turn rate you need to alter the geometry .

From what you're describing sounded like a flawed test. I am almost willing to bet if you had stock weight and lightened one with the altered cams for the torque you mentioned, everyone would pick the lighter one.

When you have a SS like the R6 that is pretty anemic on he low side torque to begin with, every day riding would be much improved with more low end. Even if you don't have the weight loss.

Now combine that low end with less weight and you see even more of a gain around town. My FZ07 is a good example of this.

Torque monster stock. Wheelies if you look at it wrong. I've dropped 20lbs off of its already light weight and honesty feel like it might as well be a dirt bike with how light it is.

My Shadow 1100 is also a good example. Already short bike. Low COG. And damn if dropping off the pounds on it didn't make it a better ride.

The issue isn't the rate at which the bike turns. You're right. You need to alter geometry for that. What the weight reduction changes thiugh is how fast the bike can get to its already geometry established turn rate. And how quick it gets back to upright and back to the other side.

All the same though I'd still be interested in reading this article.

Good point about the cooler running engine - the VFR's do tend to run a little hot although mine has yet to overheat even in Florida.

Biggest weight savings is the can followed by the cat. Actual header weight is probably very close. Someone on here and or VFRD dynoed a 5 gen before and after. (Might have been Candy) The stock headers are very good, if I remember correctly the hp gain was very minimal and that was with a PCV tune. Something like 2-3 hp. They are cheap systems so the few pounds saved on the cat and less heat from it probably make it worth it. I keep getting tempted to get their header, remove the cat and hook it up to the FMF Apex cans I run now.

The 8th gen is already an extremely capable and well handling machine in stock form as evidenced by Smoke's vid below. IIRC his only mods were a slip on exhaust and the Honda quick shifter modified to the GP shift pattern - even the center stand was still attached! My balls aren't big enough to take full advantage of the handling prowess this bike already offers in stock form. But dropping about 17 pounds and adding a few extra horsepower can only make a great bike even greater! Most folks on the forum agree that what the bike needs most is a better power to weight ratio, just a little bit more power and a little bit less heavy is all it really needs according to most of the professional reviewers as well. These Delk headers might be just what we've been waiting for.

According to zeroto60times.com the 8th gen does 0-60 in 3.0 seconds and the quarter mile in 11.4 seconds. These times are backed up by the review at CycleWorld where it did 0-60 in 3.0 seconds and the quarter mile in 11.37 seconds at 117.40 mph (link: https://www.cycleworld.com/2014/07/...iew-photos-specifications-performance-numbers ). Personally, I get great enjoyment from doing straight line 0-100+ mph blasts on my VFR. If by merely adding the headers the 8th gen could somehow become capable of doing 0-60 in under 3 seconds (only needs to be 0.1 seconds quicker) and the 1/4 mile in under 11 seconds (only needs to be 0.38 second quicker) at over 120 mph (only needs to be 2.6 mph faster) that would be wonderful news IMO, especially if it adds to the mechanical music in the process. I have no delusions of this bike ever performing like a liter bike but it would be nice if it was just a wee bit quicker/faster.

Motad headers and the old 2Brothers were the only headers that actually increased performance. There is a shit ton of r&D about those systems in a lot of configurations. Perhaps Motad is working on a new header for the newer bikes. Delkevic headers not so much. But getting the cat out of the system will save weight.

I had a motad header for a few years, it did nothing for power (Still dyno'd the typical vfr800 100whp), but it was a little lighter and louder. Beyond being lighter/louder, I am not sure why you guys are getting so worked up about delkevic making an 8th gen header. Delkivic does not make performance headers, I honestly wouldn't be surprised if it lost power over the oem header, due to it's awful collector design.

Sorry to be a buzz kill, but if you guys want to actually make power, you are going to need to go custom, hold out for an actual performance brand to make headers for the 8th gen or try to locate an original Two Brothers/Erion Racing 5th gen header and try to retrofit it to the 8th gen. The Two bros/Erion header is/was the only performance header ever made for the vfr800 and made a huge difference over both my OEM and Motad headers.

You do know that 11.4 seconds IS under 12 seconds?

When I do the swap it won't really be for performance. I know a muffler swap will get you like 2 to 3 HP. And you might kick up 0.5 withiut the cat. It'll mainly just be for the head that builds up on my leathers by the Cat and over all coolness of the engine. If you're going for gains AFAIK you'll need a PC or equivalent.

    Good information!
