    Hi All,

Does anyone know what output of the alternator on the 2007 VFR?

I'm running into a bit of an issue that would appear to be alternator related.

I'm running Motolights (which I generally leave on all the time). I just wired in the heated grips from Honda (procured from Japan by nozzle and his buddy).

Basically, I can not simultaneously run the heated grips on high and the Motolights at the same time. If I turn off the Motolights, then turn on the grips (they default to high), everything is fine. When I flip on the Motolights, off go the grips. Further, if I turn off the Motolights, the turn on the heated grips on less than high (I think there are 4-5 settings total), then flip on the Motolights, evreything stays on fine.

I'm thinking the alternator doesn't have a high enough output for both. This is of a concern, since I wear a Gerbings heated jacket in the winter, and I can imagine that would even possibly work when the above type of load is obviously a strain.

Thoughts? Ideas? Or am I just reduced to not being able to wear my heated jacket? :frown:

you are turning into a Power Ranger :)

You'll need to start adding up how much power each of the electric gizmos you ride with needs to run. You will want to know how many watts of power each gizmo wants, or how many amps it needs.

What it sounds like is happening to me is the Heated grips "brain" says there's not enough juice with the lights on so it doesn't start the heaters....it doesn't want to draw down the battery.

the grips appear to have four settings: low (one LED), medium (two LED), high (3LED) and off (no LEDs).

It may be that you just have to do things in a different order to get all your stuff "on", but you'll need to do some math, and perhaps translate, to figure out a) how much power everything is drawing, then look at how much power the bike's able to give you.

Remember at idle, you aren't likely generating as much electrical power as when you are moving. Have you tried your turn on test while riding over say 3k rpm?

also, credit goes to GoingPhaster and his Japan connection... I was just the agitant, those two did the work - and got our money. (thanks again)

Shit I said nozzle - sorry GP - too many beers and not enough stabbing myself in the thumb when putting on the grips tonight.....

As for nozzle - screw off - haha  err I mean yea good points!

Power Ranger eh - you should see me in my 'Stitch (check out the attachments). My wife seems to think I'm more like a Smurf....

Anyway, I can add up all the components, but it doesn't really help if I dunno what the max output of the alternator is....

You are correct though, I do need to run it out on the road before passing complete judgement, but it still worries me about running a Gerbings jacket as well.

Remember, I'm coming from a BMW, where you HAD to have gadgets - heh!!!
