My newest VfR is my oldest, this 1993. Has been on trickle charger and not used much this winter.
Went to ride it and starter barely turned over. After a couple try’s, all I get is a click from in front of the battery. I was able to bump start it so I ordered a new battery. I just replaced it and no joy. Same clicking in front of the battery. Connections and main ground are sound. Could it be a relay?

Could be a bad starter relay. Test battery and switch by jumping a connector across the 2 big wire terminals.

Electrical is not my strong point. This jumper is across 2 connectors on the starter motor correct? And does this bypass the relay?

You may want to inspect the connector to the relay squirrelman mentioned.

It is not unknown to get corrosion on the main fuse mounted at the solenoid as well, pull that out and take a look. Corroded terminals don't flow current well and the high resistance causes heating/melting.
