I'm brand new to the forum, discussion group, chat line technology, but I'm hooked on Interceptors and thirsty for knowledge. Like my other motorcycles my 83,84, and 85 Interceptors are being resurrected from junk. The 83 VF750 is kind of interesting. It is black and red with gold wheels, a speedometer reading kilometers and has never been through customs in the U.S. It seems a previous owner brought it over from Japan to L.A. when he took a job here. When he tried to register it he got the same runaround I did at the 4 DMV's I visited. "This thing doesn't have enough digits in the serial number so we can't register it." I'm still working on that problem. The red and white 85 looks and runs good with F1 pipes. That leaves the problem bike the beautiful blue and white 84 VF700. It seems the sound I thought was valve noise is probably more like a bad rod bearing or something equally expensive. I too have been turned down by the Honda dealership and my independent shops are buried in other work. The remedy I am currently pursuing is a junk yard motor off of Ebay. I'm hoping for the best. I'd really like to find a west coast source for reliable V4 engine rebuilding. Looking for answers. Hope this works. SteveS
All I do for you right now and offer up a warm welcome. You might have to start being the V4 California expert and then we can send people to you. Welcome to the forum!
Hi and welcome ... 1. Are you sure the "valve noise" is not cam chain tensioner gone bad??? I replaced the tensioners on my 83- 3 times and on my 84 1 time...Made a very big difference in engine noise/sound..
No, I am not sure that it isn't a cam chain tensioner? How do I check for that and where can I get another tensioner if that's the problem?
1 of the main characteristics of a bad cam chain tensioner is when you first start it up you will hear a rattling noise when the engine is idling.. you can buy the tensioners at any Honda dealer... the 1983-1985 VF750F / VF700F models cam chain tensioners would wear out after 15,000 -25,000 miles .. If you think the lower end is bad/ knocking a way to check is start it up put it in gear and apply both brakes and slowly ease out the clutch when giving it gas to put a load on the engine and if you have a bad lower end it will start to knock...
