Street Triple R v. VFR

After watching this review I feel like trading in my VFR for the Street Double, I mean Triple

 

Here's a review by RWT of the updated 2017 model with the 765cc instead of the old 675 - looks like a lot of fun to ride

Sold mine (2014 Street Triple R). Hated it compared to the VFR. Seating position, lack of wind protection, engine note (angry bees!)

It always felt like I was going faster in the bends than on my VFR, but then I checked the speedo.. not really that much faster if at all.

It wins in the suspension category. DMr can sort that out tho.

 

Unless you've installed a SpeedoHealer, your VFR wasn't going as fast the speedometer indicated. I remember the disappointment when I put the SpeedoHealer on my VFR.

A friend of mine let me ride his 675 Street triple, a few times. The Street, and Interceptor both have 2 wheels, but that's about where the similarity ends. Those 2 bikes are aimed at different types of riders. The Street is narrow, light, torquey, and they handle great. Build quality is nicer than most Hondas. Like all naked bikes, you get a full dos of windblast that's going to wear you down a lot sooner.

The Street is a sprinter. The VFR is a matarhon runner.

 

No mention to the wiring problems/recalls/failures

 

Skimad has a VFR & Street Triple..

He seems to like it - I personally think that it is only ok - Give me a CBR600rr7 anyday.

They are totally different bikes aimed at different riders.

 

I would definitely not put the Street Triple's build quality above Hondas in this instance.

I had no issues on the 2014 Street Triple R. 2014+ VFR800 also has no known gremlins.

I take the 10% into account. At 60mph its all of ~3-6mph discrepancy. Not that big of a deal.

 

I'm up in the air about those headlights..........the ones on the street triple.

 

These 2 bikes are totally different types.

 

Its like complaining that a Goldwing is crap on a track day.
I actually love the ST, I would never tour on it, but it's a cracker of a bike.
I often borrow my mates ST for a canyon run, and find the balance, handling and lightnes is intoxicating.
My 5G is a good handler, but it has nothing on the ST, you only have to think turn and it already has.
As a matter of fact, for the first few minutes I'm constantly turning in too early and have to readjust my riding style.
I also love how it keeps lifting the front wheel on slow corner exits.
It also sound very good with an open can.
If the new ST765 was available with a half fairing I would be very tempted to swap.

Totally different bikes, both awesome for the intended purpose.

Thought I might resurrect this even if it's a zombie thread...

I've owned a 1994 VFR750F twice - 20 years apart. Once when they first came out and once for nostalgia. I also owned the VFR concurrently with a Street Triple R 675 2010 model while I had the VFR750F ie. the second time around. I currently own Street Triple RS 765 2020 - a beautiful bike... I often miss my VFR - I loved it just as much.

People say they are apples and oranges and well yes they had their differences.... Differences being: one had fairing, one was naked. One was heavy(ish) ie. The VFR was something like 244kg wet and the current Street Triple 765 RS is something like 194kg wet. The VFR was classed as a sport tourer - but was kind of modelled off the iconic RC45... Due to the weight the Street Triple is what I like to describe as a scalpel... Precise, flickable - a riot.

However I don't think they are necessarily aimed at different riders...

The seating position was not pure sports on either - they are both relatively upright and comfortable rather than having all the weight on your wrists like a pure sports bike. This makes both bikes good for day to day commuting and also for having fun on the weekends. Jacks of all trades.

Another attraction of both bikes is the sound of the engines compared to inline twins and fours... both the triple and the VFR sound wicked and intoxicating.

Both bikes have very good mid ranges and decent torque down low compared to say 600cc sports bikes from the VFR era at least... I haven't ridden a modern 600 inline 4. So they have very useable power down low compared to a "screamer"...

The Street Triple has a higher seat but it's narrower and both are acceptable for a short a..e like me lol. The lightness of the Street Triple also helps with the increased seat height.

So in summary, both are great commuter and weekend bikes. Both seat you a little more upright than a pure sports bike and are comfortable. The VFR might be more comfortable for touring but the Street Triple is surprisingly comfortable too.

Anyway my 2 cents on two of my favourite bikes that I've loved over the years.

I currently have Skimads 765 RS Low 2020 at my house - It seems to be ok. It is not a Honda.
Not a chance in hell is the build quality anywhere near Honda. For short trips they are fine. Anything much over a couple of hours & I want a fairing.
In fact if you gave me a choice of CBR600RR & a Speed triple & said you need to ride to the French Alps (650miles), then the Triple would be left behind. I know the triple brakes fine & handles ok, the steering lock isn't great for a commuter but like I said its not bad. It's just they are 2 different bikes.

 

The French Alps - well that never occurred to me given my climate and terrain lol but yes if you live in the land of ice and snow I guess a fairing would make a bigger difference. My winter riding weather is about 16-20C Summer up to 45C. It would be similar to the weather in SoCal.
