Why buy an expensive rectifier?

My 1997 VFR is not charging. Looking at my Clymer manual, one obvious component that could
cause this is a "bad" rectifier. I was going to go through a big series of tests..but then saw rectifiers
on Ebay from $12.95 to way over $100. I just bought a $12.95 one and am skipping doing tests.
What's to lose? Wondering why anyone would buy an expensive rectifier..what am I missing?

 

Cheap Chinese ones are known to fail big time.

Buy a decent mosfet one

 

1) On average, a much shorter life-spam
2) Consequence of #1 - getting stranded due to R/R failure

 

I tried a cheap Chinese one when I first got the bike.
It lasted all of 4 hours and left me stranded 200km from home in the middle of nowhere.

 

Japanese OEM supplier is Shindengen.

Model # FH010BA is the OEM from ZX10...I've got on both my Ducati and VFR 7 seasons now, issue free.

 

i have it on good authority that the English translation of Shindengen is "You walkin' home, sucka !"

 

to be clear, the FH010BA made by Shindengen is an older version dead reliable Mosfet....my boots none the worse for wear, thank ya'.

 

Ok..OK..that's all info I did not know...thanks to all the replies!! ( Now I may buy TWO cheapos...with one in my tank bag!) Seriously, I will l look in to getting another one of "MOSFET" design. Replies with specific

The problem isn't that they fail - it's that they also take out other expensive components at the same time, as well as leave you stranded.

Buy a good mofset one and forget about it.

 

This is the most important bit of info I think. Melted connectors, toasted stators, and killed batteries can all happen with a crappy R/R. MOSFET is worth every penny.

The new version SH847 is 199.95 and the older but proven FHO20AA is 149.95. Both are his "super kit" and have home runs to the battery. Worth the extra coin for the new one? I don't know the difference, I think both need the adaptor plate too.

 

Bought the SH847 at 35K
Didn’t want to be cheap in the wrong way plus my OEM stator is still going strong after 50K

Well...I learned all of this new info about cheap R/R too late...got my $12.95 one today and put it on.
Works great TODAY. I only ride lately between my house and the marina...so..if it fails it is no big deal.
I am concerned about the "taking out other stuff" but will chance it.

 

I'm on my phone, so I can't find the picture, but you should see the golden brown stator I got from a crap R/R.

There are generally two ways for the regulator rectifier to fail. The first deals with diode burnout, resulting in battery drain. It is easy to assume that the issue is a bad battery because of symptoms such as dimming headlights, irregular meter readings and poor starts. Checking the voltage with a voltmeter versus relying on symptoms alone will prove highly beneficial. If the voltageought a coollittl;e drops below approximately 13 volts, the motorcycle will begin to drain the battery and eventually the engine will stop. Check for bad connections and corrosion; these also can cause voltage issues. The other failure type is shunt regulator burnout. Should the regulator rectifier fail to control voltage, the result will be battery overcharge. Again, a voltmeter will be useful for diagnosis. Generally, readings above 17 volts mean the regulator rectifier is not converting excess power. All of this excess voltage may cause the headlights to become extremely bright and then blow."

So, I bought a cool looking small volt meter:

...and will mount it in my "dashboard" so I can always monitor bike voltage. I think by doing this,
I will be able to detect any r/r failure issues waaay before any nasty damage effects can occur.
