Yes !! the fruckin FSM, Bunky ! don't turn a screw without reading it. Honda factory service manual tells all ! bent forks could have damaged frame, wheel, wheel bearings, steering head bearings or steering stem. making the bike too messedup to ride even with new forks !
Here's a link to a Dropbox copy of the manual: https://www.dropbox.com/s/lkc7dmwyi509h0b/vfr750f RC36 service.pdf?dl=0 My suggestions for fork removal: always loosen the tough bolts before you elevate the front end, especially the fork caps and the axle, but not (for hopefully obvious reasons) the triple clamps! I see your thread title was "Bent Forks", it is possible to get mildly bent forks straightened by specialists, I had this done on some lightly bent CBR600F4 forks that I bought cheap off eBay. So long as the tubes aren't creased they should be salvageable.
Thanks man really appreciate it! And I don't think I could be bent back, I lowsided the bike into a curb trying avoid a car.
If I'm not mistaken, the forks you have are the same diameter as the 5 Gen, which is 41mm. A common upgrade for the 5 gen is VTR1000 forks. There should be a couple of post on this conversion if you're looking for details.
Only because not being on my bike is a little depressing. My parts are ordered I'm just hoping to install them soon. I've never worked on a bike so hopefully it goes well. Wish me luck
Hmmm, where to begin??? Assuming you just replace the fork tubes, you should go for re-springing and re-valving. That will make a massive difference to ride comfort and handling, and more importantly cornering confidence, and is your best bang for the bucks. The forks remain externally stock. You can DIY, or send the forks to Daugherty Motorsports http://www.daughertymotorsports.com/vfr800.html for some adult assistance. You can add adjustable rebound damping by buying a replacement cartridge (Daugherty Motorsports) or using VTR1000 fork internals (these fit straight into the 5G forks). Good for your inner tinkerer. A next step as OOTV suggests is to get some complete VTR1000 forks, these will fit straight into the 5G triples, and will allow your choice of decent 4-piston brake calipers in conjunction with de-linking the front and rear brakes. You need a bracket for fender mounting, but the bars/triples/wheel/axle/discs from the 5G fit straight in. Calipers off the CBR600F4, VTR1000 SP1 and 2, or CBR929/954 are all usable, as are the original VTR1000F brakes (but they aren't the best choice). Next step (where I am at now) is to put a complete front end off something else on there. I have CBR600F4 forks, fender and calipers, VFR 6G triples and bars, with my original 5G wheel/discs/axle. This gives larger diameter (43mm) forks, fully adjustable for preload, compression and rebound. With the exception of the ignition switch (needed shimming to line up the steering lock) this all bolts together like Mr Honda intended it to do so. For the more adventurous you can put a set of upside down forks off another bike, but you are getting into some more serious mods here.
How did you end up with bent forks? If they were on the bike when they were bent you should get the frame checked
