You left it in neutral!?!

Came out of a restaurant last night with my wife and found a late model cbr 600rr lying on the ground with no one around it. I went back in the restaurant and found the rider and helped him lift it up. It had rolled a few feet and finally fell over. Significant damage to the left side fairing, mirror broken and clutch lever bent. Possibly more damage but that's a quick glance. He told me he left it in neutral and I almost couldn't believe it because it was parked on a downhill grade. Has anyone ever heard of leaving a bike in neutral? He is a novice rider obviously so I couldn't help but feel sorry for him.

 

He maybe a novice but he's also a dickhead ....presumably he couldn't find Park in his gearbox

 

Well. Parking on a grad it is a no brainer to leave it in gear. But I have to say, about 90% of the time when I park on level ground, mine is in neutral. Maybe I am a metric dickhead then. Or a dick head with a little dick but big balls!

Depends which way I'm facing. I almost never park pointed downhill, and if I do I would definitely leave it in first, but wouldn't feel confident about leaving the bike for any length of time. If I'm uphill on a slight slope or flat ground, neutral always. Uphill on a bigger slope would definitely be in 1st. Best of all is backed in to a curb.

Unless it's sloped wrong, I always park in neutral. Always have, probably always will.

 

I park in gear always.

 

3 bikes in garage, all parked in neutral.
With the Tuonos it can be a pita to get it into neutral,
so I'd rather not have to do that first thing before startup.

 

My bike is always in neutral unless I'm on a hill and want some additional protection. I would do the same in a manual transmission car.

I also always back in and park diagonal against the curb with wheels turning in. There are reasons for this as I was taught in my driver training.

Been riding since 2003 and have owned 3 bikes.

 

I leave mine in neutral, unless the grade causes me concern. It's habit now to shift into neutral as I'm pulling into a parking spot.

 

Also always leave mine in neutral - but also NEVER park facing downhill on any gradient.

 

I will always park in gear if it's on the sidestand, but will park in neutral if it's on the centrestand.

 

Something I have amazingly never thought about.
Pretty sure that I have always parked in Neutral. If there was any possibility that the bike could move because of slope, I'd find another place to park it!
Backing into a curb at an angle before deploying the sidestand is a natural. So is rolling forward so that the front wheel rests on a curb, again before dropping the stand. And the forks can be locked into the turn.

 

That's it, I'm moving to Nebraska where it's nice and flat. I was thinking aboot Florida too, but not Orlando.

Maybe somebody can come up with sidestands for both sides of bikes for those dudes that park in neutral or can't find Park..

 

It use to be taught with any vehicle with a manual transmission that 1st gear was the parking gear. Cars that would be facing downhill should also turn their tires to face the curb. Don't know what it taught these days.
