    Hey guys -

Im doing my first oil change on my bike and after doing some research it seems some people say I need motorcycle specific oil because of the clutch?

I have a 2002 VFR and purchased some Mobil1 10-40 but it's regular automotive oil, do I need to return this and get motorcycle specific oil?

    Thanks!!

Yes, return it. You can not use oils with friction modifiers. Look for other threads on synthetic oil, there will be many recommendations.

Motorcycles oil must meet the JASO MA/MA2 requirement for wet clutches.

Indeed... If you use auto oil your clutch will slip... Better get a specific one.

I've never used a motorcycle specific oil, but I do have a '99. I always thought you just had to avoid any oil that had friction modifiers added.

A lot of older type forks use ATF, it has very good anti froth properties.
From memory I think it's around 15W, but it varies by manufacturers.
Not that 15W means anything either as its not a standard, and manufacturers have their own opinion on what it should be.
I wouldn't use it on a cartridge type fork.
