I have a 1997 VFR750 that I purchased in February. It has about 23,000 miles on it and I've put about 1,000 trouble free miles on it. About a month ago, this bike began to just quit on me. Now, it will start up just fine, and I can take off and I may go 2 miles or maybe 10 or 15 miles but it will eventually just quit.

When it quits and I immediately try to start it , it will continue to hit a little but it just won't quite start. After it sets for awhile, maybe 30 minutes or sometimes less, it will start again and seem to just be fine, until the next episode

I've already replaced the fuel filter and that isn't the problem. My initial reaction is that it is a fuel problem because when it quits, it acts like it's running out of fuel. However I don't want to take anything for granted.

When it quits, I still have electrical power. All of the instruments lights still burn. If this were the voltage regulator, wouldn't the instrument lights all go out when it quits?

I am now at a loss as to where to go from here. Could the fuel pump and or the furl pump relay be an intermittent problem like this?

Any suggestion about where to go from here would be greatly appreciated.

Dont you have a volt meter?
Some time ago i had a problem with the kickstand swich that looked alike.
When it fails it would be useful to take a sparkplug out and check for the status of it, if it's wet your problem is electrical, if its dry your problem is fueling. Also is useful to try to start the bike with the sparkplug out touching the frame or a ground (any unpainted metallic part of the bike will do) to see the actual quality of the spark.
These gremlins are not easy to diagnose but once you find it its like... Oh, it was just that tiny crap.
Good luck and keep us updated!

It could be the fuel pump. The symptoms sound similar to when it happened on my wife's CBR 600. Start, go stop or hard to start and then go.
The test is to disconnect the output side of the pump and measure how much flows over a set time. I don't recall the values. I didn't bother with the test. I just bought a replacement and the problem was solved.
Is there another 4th gen owner nearby that you could swap fuel pumps with as a test?

anytime the fuel pump is questionable do the pump relay bypass as described in the FSM, basically a jumper wire that sends power to the pump directly. If the pump clicks, it's OK. pump relays are a frequent failure item.

Does your bike have a vacuum fuel tap? Might have a small leak or diaphragm hole.

This problem turned out to be the fuel pump. I put a new one on last Friday and that fixed the problem. I really appreciate all of the replies.

One problem that I did notice first when I replaced the fuel filter and then again when I replaced the fuel pump is that my fuel cut off valve does not cut off the flow of fuel completely. When turned to the OFF position, you still get a trickle. Is this common?

    Thanks again.
