Remind the dealer they didn't build the bike, they didn't do anything wrong (unless there was no oil in the engine!), they are going to get a good warranty claim, hopefully a new engine.

newer riders need to be aware that kicking too hard or using excess force on the shift lever can cause bent shift forks and difficulty getting gears.

I got 18 cold Coors light that says it is something simple and cases do not need to be split. Any takers?

Not here; my guess is the fault will be in the detente mechanism around the shift star.

I don't know anything about anything, but if l was to guess, l would say the OP shifted too gently, and something is simply jammed up. I think the fix is going to be cheap and easy.

Always remember to release the cluch between down shifts. Don't "double downshift".

Lol. Thank you for both opinions that the operator was at error here (too hard and too soft shifting). I've been riding for 20 years, on three continents, and was a motorcycle safety instructor with Team Oregon. I was taking the bike out for a nice easy ride to get her mileage up for the 600 mile service and most definitely did nothing out of the ordinary.

I'm sincerely hoping for a simple fix (for many reasons but not the least of which this is my ONLY form of transportation. Yes, I ride a bike as a primary, year round) but will let y'all know when I hear back from the dealership. She goes in Tuesday.

I take the OP's word for what happened, we are always saying how bullet proof the Honda's motors are, yet any manufacturer can have a defect in assembly or fabrication. Pretty low comment for some who just lost the use of his new bike through no fault of his own.

    NEW DATA!
Sat on the bike this morning (not running) and gently worked the shift lever. Six up, six down about three times. Eventually it felt different, like it was working thru something. Finally it shifted down and the display resolved to a “4”. I was able to up and downshift easily then. Rode the bike into the backyard and stripped the fairings for an oil change. Saw a drip on the lower fairing and followed the fluid trail up to drips from two bolts on the transmission housing. Stopped looking and buttoned it back up. Definitely going to the dealer on Tuesday.

Oh yeah! I was on fire by the time I got it home :flame:. EVERYONE knows.

I'll call them on Monday and update the service manager - but even w/o evidence of the not-shifting: a leaking clutch cover on a 300 mile bike is still a problem.

Give us a report on the Honda dealership's maintenance department. I have had very poor experiences with 2 out of the 4 Honda dealers I used.

Thank god I was out riding and doing other shit today. I would have taken the bet just to bet on this. How about we bet on what the dealer does on the leak seeing that work was done on the bike by the rider! I will bet a 12pk of Utah Squatters Full Suspension ale to your 18pk of Coors that the dealer does shit right now!;-) Cost is about the same at $12.99 on sale on the Squatters.:) Or if the Euros or Canadians want in I will bet a six pack or Guinness or other. Paypal accounts needed!;-)
