I read about all the R/R problems with these bikes. I took off the plastic after riding and oh ya, that sucker was HOT!

I checked the connector and wires, they look OK, not burned or anything.

I'm not sure if the one I have is stock - markings "SH701-12"

Anyways... I had an old PC fan so I did the "fan mod" picking up power from the license plate light (runs when ignition is on).

My question to you fine gents is: Is this enough or is it best to beef up the wires and/or buy a new R/R "just in case"?

I was thinking of putting a fan on as you did, however, I would probably still recommend running larger guage redundant wiring to the stator, and to both battery posts.

Do you guys know how extactly to run the 12ga yellow wires from the stator to the R/R?

    When I looked last night...

There are 2 sets of (3) yellows off the stator. Which is the set I wire from?
There is a plastic connector, and which set runs which way? I cant tell.

When I disconnect the pastic connetor piece, which set of 3 yellows goes directly to the stator and which set runs to the wiring harness/ RR?

    Can anyopne tell me?

    Thanks
    Steve

I second this question. i have done the wiring mods, but should I also put a fan over the RR?

I PM'd another forum member and for some reason they won't answer my question.

So please, for Kingsley and I's sake. Any info would be nice.

    Ditto...thanks for the tips!

Now that I think about, even if the R/R is operating cooler, it doesn't change the work load on the wiring.

    Ultimate Fix

According to what I have read there are 17% of us that have r/r problems. My stock one went out and I got stuck. I have a new aftermarket one and ALWAYS RECOMMEND A VOLTMETER. It cant fix you bike but it can tell you if there is a problem. I still believe that the wire melting and damage may not be so much of a design flaw in the wiring as much as an unmonitored overcharge of the system, letting all that heat unchecked until meltdown. If the facts point to only 17% than yes that is an issue but that means 83% of lucky riders have never had a problem.

Scotts electrical sells connectors for the R/R and I intend on making a jumper harness using those connectors. I am waiting to hear if they sell stator connectors as that would really make this plan work out great.

I will make a jumper harness with 12 gauge wire from the battery and the stator and I wont have to cut a thing. THe r/s connector will either bypass or be reduntant at this point I am not sure. I am also looking at using this jumper harness to relocate the r/r in a cooler spot and maybe with a fan. Using this type of modified harness gives you all sort of options. You could even run the r/r to the front of the bike?

THe bottom line is with the connectors (male and female) you can do all of this without cutting existing wires. If you just run the 12 gauge the stock wiring will be left unused and uncut. At this point I see no need to even connect them but THE ARE THERE IF YOU WANT TO PUT IT BACK TO STOCK.

As soon as I get this completed I will post pics and cost of all hardware to do this.

Also look for my PICS of my GIVI windscreen on my 91.

    Did it last weekend...

I rewired the harness & relocated the R/R.
I fabricated a bracket out of 3mm Aluminum under the Horn location.

R/R is now infront of the Radiator up under the front cowl.
Should provide for more airflow and lower temps.
R/R is also directly wired to the stator using the plastic connectors.
additionally adding 12 ga direct + & - feeds from the battery.

    Pretty simple job...just time consuming!
I will also post pics and such if any one is interested.

    Thanks
    -Steve
